In The Spotlight: Singer/Songwriter Bassette

We have another great artist for you guys to check out! As always, if you are or represent an upcoming artist, designer, producer, etc. that is interested in a feature on The Spotlight, please visit our Features/Submissions page for more information.

Today, we have London-based, Bermudan singer/songwriter Bassette! She began singing at the age of 11, after she received a karaoke machine as a Christmas gift. “It was one where we could record ourselves singing to different backings,” the singer reminisced. “That was the first time I really heard myself singing, and the first time anyone else really heard me singing, also.” Bassette began making cover videos on YouTube at around 14, and got great feedback from viewers, encouraging her to pursue music as a career, using her gifts of singing and writing. “I fail at a lot of things, but singing and writing are just something that I am addicted to, and I’m pretty good at [them],” Bassette stated.

Inspired by R&B artists like Destiny’s Child, Ashanti, Lauryn Hill, and India.Arie, as well as The Weeknd and Lana Del Ray, Bassette has a soulful, yet dark sound, with heartfelt, vulnerable lyrics that will captivate listeners. “It’s just great when people can relate to and feel something with your lyrics,” the artist said. “I just want to make music that makes people feel something.” Her latest track, “Suffocating,” is a perfect example of that. Produced by Chris Hutchings, the track speaks of a toxic, painful relationship where the two involved “aren’t good for each other, but they’re afraid to be apart,” Bassette said of the song. “They would rather be unhappy together than happy alone.” Check out the track below!

Currently, Bassette is putting the finishing touches on her debut EP, Midnight Sound! “I decided to call it Midnight Sound because that’s when I find it best for me to write, at night, when it’s dark, in that mood where I contemplate life,” she said. “I want people to take away [from the project] that it’s perfectly cool to be alone and just be you.” More than likely, she will also post a few videos from songs featured on the EP, and share those with listeners as well!

In terms of what makes her unique, Bassette believes it’s the fact that she’s willing to truly be herself and express powerful messages through her music. “I feel like a lot of artists are just so loud without really saying much or they’re trying too hard to be completely different and against the norm which is OK,” the singer said. “But if you just be yourself and do what you want to do you’re bound to be different anyway.” Bassette may be new to the music world, but she’s determined to develop herself as an artist. “I just want to grow and learn from different creative thinkers,” she said of her future, hoping to connect and create new music with other artists.

You can check out more from Bassette through BGM Entertainment as well as the singer's own YouTube channel. You can also connect with her on Facebook and Twitter
