Happy Friday y'all! We have a new music video for you guys to check out from singer Shamel for her track, "No Glory!"

On the mid-tempo, pop/soul track, the first single from Shamel's sophomore EP Layers, the London-based singer details going through the ups and downs of a relationship, realizing that there are no winners or true glory in the battles they consistently fight together.

Check out the music video below!

London-based singer/songwriter Florieme has released her video for her song, "Lady Sings The Blues!"

This music video is different than many would expect, with a touching story behind it. "I have suffered from alopecia (hair loss) for the past 2 years," the singer admitted. "After reaching the end of my tether with it, [I] decided to not only shave my hair off, but be filmed doing so for my first music video." In the video, Florieme emotionally sings as she shaves her entire head, bravely sharing that vulnerable moment with viewers. "My hope is that the video will no only raise awareness of the autoimmune disease but inspire men and women with body image issues," she added.

Check out the emotional video below!

This couldn't have been easy for her, but I commend Florieme on showing that she is not defined by her hair. The song is a beautiful listen as well!

You can read more of Florieme's story here, as well as listen to more of her music on Bandcamp, SoundCloud, and YouTube. You can also connect with her on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram!
Bringing you another great artist spotlight today! If you are or represent an upcoming artist, designer, poet, etc., please visit our Features/Submissions page to request a feature on The Spotlight!

Today, we have London-based singer/songwriter Mi'das! The artist got his start in music at the age of 12, after learning a bit from his brother who played piano and his uncle who played guitar. "I also began to sing at school assemblies when I was quite young and that gave me the performing bug," Mi'das said. He eventually went off to a music college and realized there that he wanted to pursue his own music full time. "The people and music I was exposed to at college were big first inspirations," the singer stated. "From there, it's never stopped, and I'm constantly gaining new tastes and perspectives on things."

Inspired by greats like Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles as well as Fiest and Everything Everything, Mi'das' own music brings soul and emotion that pulls listeners in. The singer just released his Stronger EP, which was the final part of his three-part Story So Far series (which also included EPs Glow and Grow). "I was in the process of wanting to my own album last year and couldn't fully decide on a direction at that point," Mi'das admitted. "That led me to thinking, 'Hang on a minute. I'll release the stuff in three EPs and see what people react to and what they like about what I do.'" In terms of Stronger, the singer calls it "the fullest soundest of the three," wanting to convey to listeners "some of the complexities in life we all come across at one point or another." Mi'das' favorite track on the project is "Too Little Too Late"(the music video for the song was featured on The Spotlight earlier in the week!). The singer feels captures what he's personally about as an artist. "I like music to be honest and soulful from a place, and also to say something," Mi'das stated. Check out Stronger below!

Currently, Mi'das has been working on new music and also working and writing with new artists. He has also been writing a bit with UK blues/soul artist Jo Harman, having actually produced and co-wrote most of her first album!

In terms of what makes him stands him out from other artists, Mi'das is focused on creating timeless music. "I'm interested in music being a craft. I'm not interested in what I call 'Fashion' music," the artist said. "My music is a unique, eclectic view on soulful music that's also influenced by folk elements." In the future, Mi'das wants to build up a loyal fan base and play to audiences in the UK and Europe. Hopefully this great talent gets across the pond to us over in the States and makes an impact here as well!

You can check out more from Mi'das on his official website, and check out more of his music on YouTube! You can also follow him on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram

Continuing to roll out these spotlights! As always, if you are or represent an upcoming artist, designer, poet, etc, please visit our Features/Submissions page for more information on a feature!

Today, we have singer/songwriter Sean Love! Hailing from New Jersey, the singer started off singing in church like several other artists, and grew a love for music. About four years ago, Sean was in a group called Block Star, performing at local shows and gaining support. However, things went wrong on the business side of things, and Sean then decided to branch off as a solo artist.

Growing up for Sean was rough, having had drug-addicted parents and gone through a few foster homes. He was moved to listen to legendary soulful artists like Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin and Teddy Pendergrass, and, even now, current R&B/soul artists like Jaheim and Anthony Hamilton. “I always gravitated towards bluesy type music, because my childhood was so crazy,” the singer said. He even first chose “Struggle” as his professional name, admitting that his mindset when he first began was “more urban, more hood” and not respecting the power of the tongue over his life. “I got to the point where I’m like, ‘Okay, I’m ‘Struggle’ because that’s everything I’ve been though,’” Sean said. “But I later changed it because I started to understand more clearly that what we say is important. If I constantly confess ‘struggle,” then that’s what I’ll be and I’ll never get to where I want to go.” He chose Sean Love after finding love and a more positive mindset when his daughter was born.

The artist uses his experiences to create and bring great music to the table. “It hits my lyrics in the respect that you hear a lot of pain and a lot of inspiration in my lyrics,” Sean said. “You’re going to hear what I went through, but you’re going to also hear maybe a way out at the end of the song.” His music is emotional, hard-hitting, and soulful, and it connects with listeners. “That’s so important to me,” Sean said of having impactful music that touches lives. “A lot of people can make music, but it’s about helping people in the music as well.”

Sean’s debut single, “Successful 2,” which draws from Drake and Trey Songz’ track “Successful,” is a testament of what his own life was, and where he’s determined to be. “I was actually in a jail cell when I wrote that song,” Sean revealed. “It’s easy [for me] to write from a painful place, and then make it something positive, or make something beautiful out of it.” Check out the song below!

Currently, the singer is putting finishing touches on a full EP and performing in different cities, working towards becoming a better artist and getting his name out there. In terms of what separates him from other artists, especially mainstream, he feels his music has a more personal feel. “I’m just putting my story to music right now,” Sean said. “I think that’s what separates me, just the genuineness, the pain, and the soulfulness of my lyrics, with a [pop] and current type edge. I’m a gumbo of things.” In the future, Sean is determined to leave a great legacy with his music inspiring other people. He also wants to branch out into acting, currently taking classes to advance his craft. “I want to definitely be all that I can be musically, and then touch on some acting. Just be all that my talents allow me to be, [do] all that God has called me to do.”

For more information, you can visit Sean’s official website. You can also follow him on Twitter and Instagram!
British singer, songwriter and producer Monique recently released her EP, The Gift, which has garnered great reviews from Alt Sounds, Urban Development, ILUVLIVE, Guestlist Magazine and the MOBO Awards!

The EP was inspired by Monique's own pregnancy and her embracing of motherhood (she recently gave birth to a baby boy!). The singer states that the EP “explores the theme of time and moments in a world that moves so fast that we rarely stand in the present. There are moments that bring us face to face with ourselves and others that are willing us to take a look in the mirror. To stop and consider our course or just to simply enjoy, be thankful and content."

Check out more of my review, and stream the EP below!

Though only 18 minutes, The Gift takes listeners through Monique's own personal journey of self-acceptance. On the project, the singer goes through the ups and downs of love, abuse, and the reminder to be grateful for each day. If you listen, it really is a life story filled with ups and downs, ultimately finding a great happiness.

The beautiful and mellow “Forever With You” starts the EP, honoring a timeless love that Monique promises her soul to. “You have my soul for a lifetime, a few minutes just won’t do. Give me forever, forever with you,” she sings. The mid-tempo “Wanna Be Where You Are” recounts Monique missing her love, who is working to make life better for them both. The EP takes a dark turn with the ballad “Doing Time” as Monique reflects on an abusive relationship. “Like a whisper in the wind, no one heard a thing,” Monique sings of the troubles hidden behind close doors. On  “Nothing’s Certain But The Past,” however, she is determined to make a change and not let her past affect her present and future any longer. By the end of the EP, Monique is in a much better place as she opens up about her optimistic views on the title track, "The Gift." She reflects on her present, stressing to listeners the importance of enjoying and being grateful for today!

This is truly a great project with beautiful music from beginning to end. Monique’s soulful vocals drawn you in from the very start and keeps your attention throughout. It's a very mellow, smooth, and well-written project that you will definitely enjoy!

RATING: ★★★★½ (Four and a half stars)

You can purchase The Gift on iTunes now and stream the EP below!

Got another spotlight for you all, and several more in the coming weeks! I’m definitely very excited! As always, if you or your client is interested in being featured on The Spotlight, please check out our Features/Submissions page for guidelines!

Today, we have Berlin-based singer Fanci! The singer got his start in music fairly early, taking classical piano lessons at the age of 6, and eventually went on to take jazz lessons with Berlin's famed piano player Reggie Moore and guitar lessons with Rudy Stevenson. “Both taught [me] how to improvise on piano and guitar, and so I was able to write songs,” Fanci said.

Fanci grew up in southwest Berlin, where many American military troops were stationed, so he actually always hung out with American kids. “My father was a huge James Brown and Marvin Gaye fan so I was surrounded by funk and soul artists,” he stated. “The German music never excited me.” Inspired by artists like Curtis Mayfield and Prince, some of Fanci’s own music has a funk feel, but he also connects various genres of music between different musical eras. “I often sing with a falsetto voice,” the singer said of his musical style. “In my instrumental arrangements, I like the combination of old analog instruments like a mellotron, which was already used by the Beatles and Genesis in the early 70s or a hammond organ with different drum computer sounds like a linn drum machine or a roland tr-808.”

His own song, “Funky Sexy Cool” mixes George Michael's "Too Funky" and Prince's "Kiss,” though later he and producers Ryan Benyo and Monte Malone added a bass line. The song is really fun and will have you dancing within seconds! It has a retro vibe that definitely stands apart, and I believe could really do well on the charts! Check out a snippet of the awesome track below!

Currently Fanci is working on his first album, cutting down tracks to create the final product. “I wrote about 50 songs and now I'm reproducing the potential best songs,” he said. In addition to putting the final touches on the album, Fanci records with different German bands and artists, playing on the keys.

In terms of what sets him apart from other artists, his sound is definitely very distinctive. “I believe there aren't many artists who mix up the sounds of different decades,” Fanci said. “Nowadays the focus is on fatness and danceable rhythms.” Regarding his future in music, Fanci keeps his ambitions very simple. “I want to retain the freedom of writing songs at my leisure and hopefully with the same team I'm working with now,” he said.

You can check out more from Fanci on his official website and SoundCloud, as well as connect with him on Facebook, and Twitter!

On Thursday, December 18, I was blessed with an opportunity to attend and cover Anthony Hamilton's "Home for The Holidays" tour stop in Washington, D.C. The tour features soul singers Leela James and Mali Music, and it was an amazing show!  All three of these great acts were the perfect combo for this tour. The vibe with everybody was positive and chill, and I had so much fun, singing and dancing to wonderful soul music all night!

Read more on my experience, and check out some photos and video below!

Triscina Grey of WHUR 96.3 was the host of the evening, introducing each act. Mali Music came on first as the opener. I had heard some of his music before, but he made me a fan last night. His music, which included hits like "Walking Shoes" and "Ready Aim" was so moving and inspirational. I really vibed with him, and ended up purchasing some of his music after the concert to listen to.

Leela James is one of the biggest balls of energy I have ever seen perform! Seriously, her talent is impeccable, but what really draws you in is her passion for music as she sang songs like "Music" and "So Good." She had the audience glued to her the entire time as she performed and really engaged everyone. She even jumped off the stage and into the aisles to see and touch the people (if you see her silhouette of her and her hair, that's how close she was to me...the light was blinding!). Leela left it all on the stage, and I was seriously impressed.

When I tell you Anthony and his background singers, the Hamiltones, SANGGGGG!!! I almost fell out (*laughs*)! Anthony sang songs from his Home For The Holidays album (an amazing project for the holidays...definitely go listen and buy it!), as well as his classic hits like "Cool" and my favorite "Can't Let Go," as well as his latest "Best of Me." He and his entire band had so much energy and great musical chemistry together...probably the best I've seen between a main act and his background singers ever. Everyone loved their dance steps and soulful voices, especially the ladies! Yes, I swooned. They even did a gospel medley of some old school songs that you would hear in the church!

Overall, the concert was amazing!Anthony puts so much effort into his show, and I loved every aspect of it!  I would definitely go see him again in concert. Perfect for a romantic date night! (*winks*)

Check out my pictures and some great video from the concert below!

Last week, I put up my feature with singer Alexis Hightower. Today, I have a review for her debut full length album Girl Next Door, which mixes classic jazz, soul, and a touch of hip hop. Her sound is grounded in jazz and R&B, which is evident on this album. What's great about this album is that Alexis is very transparent in her lyrics, and the music is soulful and calming. I've never honestly been a huge jazz fan, but the different artists that I have heard in the genre always give a fun, yet relaxing vibe in their music. I definitely looked forward to checking out Alexis' project.

Check out my review below!

Alexis' album is comprised of mostly slow or mid-tempo tracks, and several of them are love-centric. Alexis has no problem expressing her feelings in songs like    "We Can Do This," and "Love Thing," both mellow and calming. She sings to her love about their relationship, expressing that they can have a clear future if they believe in each other and try to make things work.

The inspirational track "Steady You Go" is a standout song on the album, pushing listeners to keep going in life in spite of rocky roads and long journeys ahead to reach desired paths.
"Clap Your Hands" is another moving track that celebrates the good in life, versus always focusing on the negative. Alexis sings, "You may stress and strife...but if you love life, you better clap your hands." It just reminded me personally that, yes, life can get rough, but at the end of the day, I'm still living and I should make the most of each day.

Other tracks include "Sweet Silent Hunger," "Maybe Baby," and "Whoever You Are," as well as an interlude of spoken word from artist mTkalla Keaton. The chilling ballad "Just A Song," also a single, ends the album on a strong note.

Girl Next Door is a relaxing, positive album to listen to. Alexis' voice definitely has pure soul, and her lyrics are real and honest.  My only wish is that there were a few more songs with a change of pace aside from the slow tempo that mostly takes over the album. "MI Crooked Letter" breaks away from the pack, but it would've been nice to hear a few other more upbeat tracks. Overall, however, the album is a nice listen. Alexis does have a beautiful voice, and a great message for listeners.

RATING: ★★★★☆ (four out of five stars)

The album is available on iTunes NOW, so be sure to buy a copy! You can hear more from Alexis on her official website and SoundCloud, as well as connect with her on Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube
Another spotlight for y'all! As always, if you are or know of an upcoming musical artist, designer, producer, etc., that should be featured on the blog, please email me at BrittanyShawnte@ gmail.com (allow time for response).

I want you all to check out singer Alexis Hightower! Combining classic jazz, soul, and a tiny bit of hip hop, this unique, talented singer is definitely one to look out for!

Born in Nashville but raised in Oakland, CA and then L.A., Alexis’ parents got her started in music. Though they weren’t musicians themselves, they constantly listened and played music, which Alexis loved. “My parents loved to entertain, and music was always a big part of that,” she said. “I felt very early on, probably from the time I was four or five, that music would be an important part of my life.”

While her parents were huge fan of classic soul artists like Marvin Gaye, Roberta Flack, James Brown and more, Alexis’ cousins and sister introduced her to other artists as well like Led Zeppelin, Sinead O’Connor, and N.W.A. Growing up around these eclectic sounds inspired Alexis’ own music and creativity. “I think you can hear the laid back, layered California thing in there,” Alexis said of her own sound. “I like for my music to be tight and focused, but I also need a sense of space in my music, and that's definitely the Cali in me.”

Alexis’ upcoming album, Girl Next Door, is set for release on November 25 (I plan to have a review up for you all on Friday!), and will be sure to reflect a diverse amount of sounds! “One day I realized that I had this collection of songs and that they were kind of a complete thought, or more like a journey,” she said of the album. “I finally felt like I had ten songs that were good enough to see the light of day. Also, they had a shape when you put them together in a certain order.” Working with artists like trumpet player Duane Eubanks and Gerry Leonard, Alexis wrote most of the songs herself, as well as arranged parts and played on them as well. Her hope for listeners with this album? “I guess what I really want is for the listener to be able to press play and leave the album going until it's over. Otherwise, why make an album?”

Currently, the singer is working on some remixes from the album, and collaborating with some producers to create new material. She is also working on a film project that should be released in spring 2015!

As far as what separates her from other artists, Alexis feels that it’s her unique way of telling a story that makes her stand out.” I really love great lyrics and putting feeling into every word. I think autotune is fine, but sometimes I wish I could understand the lyrics more,” she said. “Also, I am very hands-on. I have no idea what it's like for other artists, but I like knowing my way around a mixing board, a drum kit, a keyboard, whatever it takes. That's fun for me.” Alexis joked that “world domination” is her goal for the future but really just wants to be able to grow her audience, and travel the world creating and playing music. “Making music, making money, being with people you love, and having a good time-that's pretty much my definition of a sweet life,” she said. Sounds good to me!

You can hear more from Alexis on her official website and SoundCloud, as well as connect with her on Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube
Russian-born/LA-based soul singer Cooper Phillip is a true talent to behold! I want you all to check out her beautiful debut music video, "Silence," the first single from her Walk A Mile EP!

Released on October 6 and directed by Scott Nathan, the music video has a simple and classic black and white look, allowing viewers to focus more on Cooper's amazing vocals. She has serious soul and passion, and you hear it from the second she opens her mouth to sing! It's definitely a standout ballad, and I'm purchasing my copy right after I publish this!

I have a lot of spotlights coming up, and even more submissions to look through soon. I plan to
hopefully have at least one spotlight a week for a bit, while I catch up (*fingers crossed*). As always, if you or your client is an upcoming singer, rapper, actor, designer, etc., please email me at BrittanyShawnte@gmail.com (Please give at least two weeks for response).

Today on The Spotlight, we have singer/songwriter Constance Renoir! Raised in Brooklyn, NY, Constance got into music at a very young age. “I would say, by 9 years old, I had written my first song, and I knew that I could really sing,” she said. In junior high, the singer had what she called “sort of a life changing experience,” when she was asked by her music teacher, Ms. Christie, to perform in a talent show. “I had never performed before, and so I didn’t know which song to sing, so she recommended to me that I perform Mariah Carey’s ‘Hero,’” Constance recalled. “Once I grabbed that mic, and sang those specific lyrics, I knew that was what I wanted to do.” From there on, she started following Mariah’s music, trying to match both her vocals and songwriting skills.

In addition to Mariah, she’s inspired by some of the great artists that also call NY home, including the Notorious BIG, Jay Z, Lil Kim, Mary J. Blige, and Aaliyah. “My sound is a fusion of all those people,” the singer said. “I call it hip hop soul, or ‘soul pop.’” Her music has a fun, 90s’ chill vibe, which is definitely inspired by her Brooklyn roots. “I believe that you can make mainstream music that still has some meaning. It doesn’t have to sound fake or forced,” she said, expressing that when she makes music, she makes it with a purpose. “I mean what I say in my lyrics. They are things I’ve seen and experienced,” Constance added.

In our interview, I asked Constance specifically why she thought it was important to bring back that hip hop soul feel from music back in the day. She gave a honest answer. “There is no real distinction between hip hop and R&B on the radio. Rappers sing and singers rap,” Constance said. “When I sit with kids my age (16-21), all they do is complain about how much trash they hear on the radio. They want to hear music that doesn’t aim to disrespect women, or make them want to do negative things. They just wanna vibe.” Taking “Can’t You See,” by 90s R&B group Total ft Biggie as an example, the artist continued: “That first line makes me jump out my seat. ‘Give me all the chickenheads from Pasadena to Medina!’ That line is fun without being over done. Simplicity needs to make a comeback.” I definitely agree. It’s clear that Constance is doing just that with her own music!

In November of 2013, Constance released her first single, pop/R&B track "Rain,” which was originally sung by Brooklyn artist Razah. The song got great feedback, and was featured on several urban blogs. In February of this year, Constance released her first original single, “Still Lonely,” on Valentine’s Day. Telling the story of being caught in a love triangle, Constance’s vocals and raw emotion truly shine on the track, letting her true experiences shine through in her lyrics.

When Constance emailed me her most recent track, “Around The Way Girl,” over to me, I immediately was jamming. Inspired by her own life and how she likes to have a good time partying with her friends, being “the baddest girls in the building all for fun,” the singer decided to make a song for the girls “who aren’t too stuck up to hang.” The track was recorded at Brook Brovaz studio with Constance’s favorite engineer Kia. Check out the fun track below!

Currently, the singer is working on a 2 part demo called R and Beat, which will be released sometime later this month. “Around The Way Girl” was the first single from the “Beat” side of the demo, while Constance will release her newest single “You and I,” from the “R” side, which will “feature a softer side and focus on vocal harmonies.”

In terms of what makes her stand out from other artists, Constance believe it’s her edge that puts her above the rest. “I’m not cutesy or super polished,” she admitted. “But I think that’s what my fans will love about me. Everything I sing about is really from me.” She has dreams of really making an impact on this industry, make exceptional music and growing as an artist. Many artists, of course, have dreams of getting signed, sell records, winning awards, and going on tours, and Constance doesn’t count herself out from that. However, she also wants to “inspire, spread love, and be inspired.” The singer is truly working towards her goals solo, and doing a great job so far. “All I have is music right now and I’m just trying to bring my visions to life while staying true to myself. I know if the world gives me a chance, I won’t disappoint,” Constance said. It’s only upwards from here!

Be sure to check out more from Constance on her official website as well as SoundCloud, and follow her on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram
