Today, we have pop artist Nick Deutsch! He was introduced to music at a young age through his family. His mother, who was a teaching pianist, always played on their grand piano at home, which Nick and his other siblings would dance to. “Music was really always a present art form in my life,” he stated. With that upbringing, Nick began piano lessons himself, learning classical and jazz music, but admitted that he didn’t practice much until he was a teenager. However, piano soon became his primary instrument to compose music.

His high school years, he noted, were rough, but soon found another outlet to help him through. “I withdrew into the world of songwriting as a means of self expression and have kept it as a valuable tool,” Nick said, even recording demos on cassette tapes. Nick went on to study at NYU, which allowed him to connect with various songwriters in New York, opening him up to different opportunities to expand his music career.

As a ‘90s kid, Nick was inspired by artists like NSYNC, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, No Doubt and Nirvana. “While often cheesy, there’s a huge sense of chorus and melody in that music that’s undeniable,” he said. He also likes country artists like Kacey Musgraves and Miranda Lambert, as well as different British pop artists. The singer has always had a passion for music, and honestly couldn’t see himself doing anything else. “I have such a wild horse mind and music is the one thing that centers and calms down my thoughts,” Nick admitted. “At this point, I'd be miserable doing anything else. When you can't walk away from something, it's a good sign it's meant to be.”

His latest track, “Under Your Ocean,” from his upcoming EP Heartsaver, was inspired by an unhealthy relationship where the singer admitted he felt like he was drowning. “We both naively thought "love alone" would be enough to make things work but I quickly realized it wouldn't,” Nick said, stating that the song, written and recorded with his longtime producer Joey Auch, is probably the heaviest track on the project. “I think the lyrics do a great job of revealing the confusion of being in that space,” the artist added. Check out the track below!

Heartsaver, which is expected to be released in late summer, is mostly upbeat pop, other than “Under Your Ocean.” “Every song looks at love from different angles be it friendship, infatuation, heartbreak etc.,” Nick said of the project. “Listeners can definitely expect to hear a story in every song!”

Currently, the artist is working on a few new tracks, but is primarily focused on performing and “getting Heartsaver out to the world.” As far as what makes him stand out from other artists, Nick believes it’s the fact that listeners really get his experiences from his music. “There's a lot of great songs on the radio but I often feel like the personal narrative has been left behind. The writing is often so vague and generalized that anyone can sing the song,” he stated. “Sometimes that's definitely the point, but I always want to feel like the fingerprint of the story is in the vocal. I think that people can relate to my songs but also feel like they understand me as a person without having to research.”

In the future, Nick’s biggest goal is to be able to sustain himself fully as an artist, committed to working hard towards making his career the best it can be. He would also love to write for other artists, as well as eventually grow into a position to be able to mentor others and work in music education. “There's so much misinformation out there and I'd love to be in a place where I can help people work on their craft without losing their mind,” Nick said.

Another new spotlight to start the week, and more are on the way!

Today we have Atlanta-based neo-soul artist Nisan Joseph! Raised in Houston, TX, the artist revealed that he was brought up by traditional parents, who raised him on timeless gospel and old-school R&B, which eventually influenced his own sound and lyrics. Nisan actually didn’t start singing until he was a senior in high school after he was forced into choir as an elective. “It was pretty much fate, or in God’s plan, that I got into music,” he said. Currently, the singer is finishing up a chemistry degree at Clark Atlanta University, and is signed with Loud N Klear Entertainment, balancing school and music. Though Nisan admits that he has a love of science, he plans to focus completely on music after graduation.

In discussing classic R&B music, Nisan also opened up about the state of R&B music today. “It’s in an interesting place where I think we’re slowing finding a balance,” he said, stating that just a few years ago, we were hearing a lot of the same sounds. Now, Nisan believes that we’re getting back to real music with substance. He cited artists like Bryson Tiller, who is not traditional R&B but, with his “trap soul,” develops honest and vulnerable music that others can relate to. Other artists that Nisan is inspired by include D’Angelo, John Legend, Musiq Soulchild, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, and Jazmine Sullivan.

With his debut single, “All Night,” Nisan showcases his own soulful R&B sound, giving listeners a classic track to enjoy. At the time, Nisan was doing a lot of writing about heartbreak and relationship issues. “My manager put a little bug in my ear, saying that I needed to switch it up. I didn’t have a love song [yet],” he admitted. Inspired by one of his favorite R&B albums of all time, Usher’s Confessions, the singer wrote the love song that was current but “true to lyricism and metaphors,” working with producer Tedy P. Check out the music video for the track below!

Currently, Nisan is working on his full debut project, putting in serious work in the studio with his production team. “We’re really creating a great sound and putting together solid records that are real, that are relatable, that are fun, and that are musically and sonically solid,” he said. Nisan revealed that the project will give a modern R&B feel and should be released around late summer or fall, with the singer focusing on putting out a quality project that listeners will gravitate to. In addition to this project, Nisan is writing songs for other artists as well. He is also creating a mixtape of remixes to continue to build up his fanbase.

In terms of what makes him stand apart from other artists, Nisan credits his amazing team that works alongside him. “I’ve been very blessed to be surrounded by amazing people that work just as hard as I do in really making sure that I become a success,” he stated. “At the end of the day, it’s not so much the skill that separates you from everybody else. It’s really about the work ethic and the people that you have supporting you.” In the future, Nisan hopes continue singing and performing, and hopes to earn awards for his work. However, he plans to retire as a songwriter creating classic music, which means more to him than being an artist or celebrity. “As long as I can live comfortably using the gifts God gave me, I think that’s considered success for me,” Nisan said.

You can check out more from Nisan on his SoundCloud and YouTube. You can also connect with him on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram!

Truly love being able to share these great upcoming stars with you all, and it's awesome to hear from those of you guys that are becoming fans of their work!

Today, we have UK-based singer/songwriter Yoji! The R&B/pop singer was raised in London with a family of artists. With the support of her family, Yoji began learning how to play piano at the age of 8, but was trying her hand at song writing even before that. “I used to write songs in the playground with my friend and then perform them to everyone in a big showcase,” she said. “They didn’t really make any sense looking back but it was the best part of my day making music in the breaks.”

After moving to the area of Suffolk at 11, Yoji continued piano lessons under teacher Phil Graves, learning classical music as well as jazz. She was inspired so much by the talent and artistry of Alicia Keys as well. “The way she combined piano and voice was sensational and was an example for me and opened up my creativity to start writing songs using the piano as a tool.,” the singer stated. Throughout her time in school, she has continued to write and perform, putting her full focus on music after her graduation.

Yoji is inspired by other artists such as Amy Winehouse, Jill Scott, Lauryn Hill, Stevie Wonder, and Aretha Franklin. "Artists that play the piano and sing are a great demonstration on how to combine the two in performance," she said. "They all invoke emotions within me and they create powerful music." Her debut EP, OceanGovern SunshineRule, was released in 2015 and shows her influences, with Yoji creating a collection of powerful songs relating to love. The title actually reflects the meaning of her name, which is Japanese for "ocean, govern," and "sunshine, rule." Yoji explained, "My mum studied fashion and loved Yohji Yamamoto’s name. My parents took out the letter ‘h’ as they thought that made the name look more feminine." The singer went on to add, "I think the title works well with the meanings and messages in my music as it’s about discovering self-worth, being empowered, using emotions to create something positive and taking control of your own destiny."

One of Yoji's favorite tracks on the project, "I Need More," is an empowering track for women, encouraging them to never settle in love. "I wrote [it] after being let down in a relationship and vowing not to let it happen again," she explained. "My friends have also shared similar experiences and I wanted to write a song to remind us that we don’t need to rely on anyone as we are powerful enough on our own. That’s why in the song I say, ‘I’ll be a fearless knight, fighting for what’s right, I won’t lose sight of my worth.'" The singer added, "In the song the women becomes her own savior and is not the stereo typical damsel in destress waiting for the man to fight for her."

Currently, Yoji is recording songs for her next EP, as well as working on new collaborations with other artists. She also plans to have another tour in the UK this summer to promote OceanGovern SunshineRule!

The artist believes that what sets her apart from the rest of the pack is creating music that will evoke emotions and actually have meaning in other people's lives. "I feel like my music is honest, [and] at times vulnerable because of that," Yoji said. "I aspire to write songs that people can relate to."
In the future, she wants to continue to grow with her music, and hopes that more people will hear it. She also wants to create a full album with great musicians contributing to it. "I’d then love to showcase it in a world tour as I love to travel, explore new places and most of all perform on stage!" Yoji added.

You can check out more from Yoji on SoundCloud and YouTube. You can also follow her on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram

We have a great spotlight to start the week! As always, if you or your client are interested in being featured on The Spotlight, please visit our Features/Submissions page for more information!

Today, we have singer/songwriter and producer Matthew Steeper! From the age of four, Matthew has been singing, playing piano and the drums! Originally from Canada, the artist moved overseas to eastern Europe with his family, where he exposed to dance and electronic music, which was inspiring to him. "When I decided to do music as a career, that was where my passion was," Matthew stated.

In the beginning of his career, Matthew actually started as a producer, and started to create electronic music at the age of 12. Attending Berklee College of Music in Boston, he eventually moved to New York City where he soon received more work in production of dance music, branching off into writing and singing. "It kind of gave me a great, even perspective of the sides of creating music," he acknowledged. Inspired a lot by European artists like Tiesto, Armin, Astro Projection and Aly & Fila, Matthew was motivated by seeing producers being artists as well.

In 2012, Matthew's first major release  as a featured artist with Canadian DJ/producer duo Project 46 on track, “No One,” which became a Beatport Top 10 hit. He then went on to creatively oversee the group's album “Beautiful” on Ultra Records, which included a Grammy-nominated collaboration, “Last Chance” with Kaskade! Collaborating with Blind Scuba Divers, he also co-wrote the track, "Models and Bottles” which was featured in 22 Jump Street, starring Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill. In 2015, Matthew kept the momentum going with his first radio hit, “Come Alive” with Adam K, while releasing other new tracks. At the end of the year, he ended up signing a major publishing deal with Spinnin' Record's publishing affiliate, MusicAllStars/Sony ATV!

The artist keeps grinding and creating, writing, producing, and performing new tracks. One of his latest collaborations is track, "We Unite," with Italian producer duo Haxon & Rush. The track is a great listen, and is actually based on an experience in Matthew's own life, which was very special to him. "It's really a love song about two people that wish they could be together, but they're separated for whatever reason," Matthew said. "It's about the universe bringing them together, and the climax being when they are finally united." Check out the track below!

In the future, Matthew has plans for a full-length album, and may even have some re-releases of his other collaborations with DJs and producers. "There's definitely an album in the works," the artist stated. "I just want to make sure it's done right and in the right time." He's currently focused on continuing to build up his overall brand and catalog, working with other great artists and producers.
In terms of what sets him apart from other artist, Matthew believes he has a true understanding of the music world, balancing work as a producer, songwriter, and singer. "When I write a song, I can write it as an artist, and I can write it as a DJ or producer, listening to what a crowd would want to hear," he stated. That overall perspective gives him a bit of an edge, being able to understand different sides of the spectrum within the industry. Throughout his career, Matthew hopes to continue to take risks as a singer/songwriter, regardless of any doubts or fears. He also hopes to have bigger features with specific brands to be able to grow in his career, and develop a bigger platform for his own music.
You can check out more from Matthew on his SoundCloud. You can also follow him on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram

Another spotlight to start the week, and there are definitely quite a few more on the way!

Today, the spotlight is on rising singer, producer, engineer AND rapper Myze! Hailing from Chattanooga, TN, he was raised in the church and grew up on gospel and Christian rock music. began dabbling in music during his junior year of high school, working on production just as a hobby. During his senior year in 2013, Myze produced a track for one of his cousins, which sparked his interest “It just felt really good to hear someone else’s voice on something I did,” the artist admitted. “From that point on, I just learned how to produce for myself.”

In our interview, Myze shared the short and sweet story of how he came up with his artist name. “It’s actually kind of a corny story, but I like it,” he laughed. With his light brown eye color, he used to get a lot of compliments on his eyes when he was younger. “One day, I was just sitting in my bedroom, and just thinking ‘What really made me growing up?” he said of coming up with his artist name. “I put [the phrase] ‘My eyes’ together and made Myze.”

Inspired by Timbaland, Aaliyah, Gucci Mane, Drake, and more, Myze creates his own unique style of music that hails from his versatile tastes in genres. “I know the music I want to hear and, to do that, I just figure if I create my own music, write my own songs, and produce, I can put my whole mind out there, and I don’t have to depend on anyone else,” he revealed.

Back in October 2015, the artist dropped his project, Please Don’t Listen. The title was, in a sense, reverse psychology, as Myze used the phrase “Please, Don’t Listen,” to spark curiosity for listeners. “When we were kids, you always did things you were told not to do,” the artist said, hoping that the title would get people to actually listen to his work. Be sure to cop the project on iTunes now!

This year, Myze introduced his series, #MyzeMondays, releasing not only new music, but art, t-shirts, etc., anything to engage people. One of the most recent tracks he dropped, “Amy,” which was inspired by rapper Logic’s track “Nikki,” which actually spoke about nicotine. “It just sounds like he’s talking to a woman, and it makes you feel like there’s a relationship going on,” Myze stated. “You get so wrapped up into the song that you actually forget you’re listening to a song about cigarettes.” Incorporating that feel into song, he gave life to his love of Amsterdam Vodka (which he calls Amy), and he talks about his experience with liquor on the track. Check out “Amy” below!

A multi-talented artist, Myze literally writes, produces, engineers, and performs his work on his own, which he admits can be a struggle for him in terms of balance, but he is able to buckle down and get the work done. “Most people just do one thing, like just produce or just write. I do everything for myself top to bottom,” Myze said. “Some days, I dedicate time to engineering, some days producing. Some days I take the time out to contact people and try to get engineering spots or producing placements here and there.”

Currently, the artist is not in a rush to create another project, instead focusing on building with people and creating a solid fan base, rather than putting out too much music. In terms of what sets him apart from other artists, Myze believes it’s his go-with-the-flow attitude in terms of creating music that makes him stand out. “Whatever I feel, I’m going to create. I create music because I enjoy it, and because I know it He also wears all of the hats in his career from the music side to the public relations and management sides, so he’s definitely on the grind!

You can check out more from Myze on SoundCloud, and follow him on Twitter and Instagram!

Today, we have indie pop singer/songwriter, Chloe Baker, better known as Bitter’s Kiss! Hailing from New Jersey, Chloe grew up in a musical family and got the bug when she was really young. “I grew up around instruments and have been singing ever since I was really little,” she said, also stating that she loved writing and musical theater as well. “This love of writing and singing meant making music from as young as I can remember.” With a recording studio in her family home, Chloe’s father eventually allowed her to record her first original song when he though she was old enough.

Growing up in a diverse area, the singer was inspired by people of different races and socioeconomic status, but also acknowledged her parents helped to mold her and her music as well. “My parents gave me a lot of freedom to make my own choices growing up and I think that has helped me mature and grow as a person as well,” Chloe stated. She also has developed her own eclectic style of music due to the variety of music she grew up listening to, from rap to country music. “I think whether it is rap, country, rock, or pop music, the music that inspires me is the music that sends a message and has meaning behind it,” she said. “Some artists that I think do this are The Beatles, Carole King, and N.W.A.”

Chloe admitted that it was always her dream to make music a full-time career, though she wasn’t sure if it would be a stable occupation for her. “Once I put my songs on SoundCloud and got a great response, it showed me that I do have a shot at doing this as a career and I decided it was what I was going to do,” she admitted. She chose to the name “Bitter’s Kiss,” for her artist name after recording her first album, deciding that the name fit her music well. “Like my music, it is a name that can represent that good things exist within bad ones and vice versa,” Chloe revealed. “Also, since I was just starting out and wasn’t sure what direction my music would take, I wanted to classify myself as a project. Bitter’s Kiss started as a project name that has now stuck as my artist name.”

In her career thus far, Chloe has garnered attention all over the globe, creating powerful songs dealing with love, religion, suicide, etc. Her most recent track, “No One Will,” is a song discussing trust issues in relationships, one that Chloe believes is not against love, but shows the downside of love. “It is basically saying that even though it is sad not [to] be loved, not loving protects you from being hurt,” she admitted. “The inspiration for this song comes from the stories about love hurting people both physically and emotionally that I hear about and witness all the time.”

Check out the video for the track below!

Currently, the artist is working on a new EP as well as some new EDM music! She is also planning to do more live shows this coming summer as well as continue to work towards becoming a better artist. In terms of what separates her from the back, she believes it’s her personality and messages that shines through her music. “I think that my sound is very raw because I am not trying to be anyone else but myself,” Chloe said. “I am not afraid to get messages across and discuss issues often ignored. I take certain situations and show a different side of them. Mostly, I think a lot of people today get caught up in the glitz and glam of stardom and I am just in it because of my love for music.”

In the future, Chloe wants to be touring, building up her fan base, and connecting with more people all over the world as Bitter’s Kiss. She would also love to collaborate with some of her favorite artists like John Legend and Kendrick Lamar. “I am trying to take things day by day and make the best decisions to better my chances of reaching these goals,” Chloe stated.

You can check out more from Chloe as Bitter’s Kiss on her official website and SoundCloud. You can also connect with her on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram!

We have a great spotlight to start the week, and more on the way! As always, if you or your client is interested in a feature on The Spotlight, please visit our Features/Submissions page for more information.

Today, we have R&B singer Trent Watkins! Hailing from San Diego, CA, Trent grew up in a talented musical family, with a foundation in the church with his father serving as a pastor. In addition to participating in the church choir, he also starred in musicals in grade school. “I would say my upbringing inspired my sound mostly through the diverse groups of people that I interacted with,” the singer stated. “While much of the R&B is what sticks out in my singing style, the songwriting, topics and styles, are drawn from the many genres I was exposed to.” However, in middle and high school, singing and performing took a back seat to other regular teenage things like sports and girls.

After a break up in college, however, Trent began working on more music and songwriting, and even released two mix tapes, The Liberation and Life, Love and Heartbreak. “It wasn't until recently I decided to really pursue music as a career,” Trent admitted. “For the longest, I was told that music was a hobby. I spent most of my time going to school trying to find a ‘real’ job.” Motivated by his wife’s launch of her own fashion company, the singer decided to work towards his singing career full time. “I was always serious about the music I created just not about the career that follows it. Now I've gotten the inspiration and motivation to put two and two together.” While inspired by other R&B artists like R.Kelly, Trey Songz, and Ne-Yo, Trent stated that he looks up to Usher the most. “From 8701 to Confessions to Here I Stand, he was always telling a relatable story,” he said. “That's what I strive for in my music. I want it to attach to people's past, present and future.”

One of the singer’s most recent tracks, “You Should Be Famous,” is an example of how he uses those influences in his own sound. Trent admitted that the track was also inspired by his wife’s fashion company as well. “We needed a runway ready sound for the launch and this one was perfect,” Trent said. Written with songwriter Ichiro Suezawa and produced by Marc Solomon, the upbeat dance track definitely keeps listeners moving. Check it out below!

Currently, Trent is working on his debut studio album entitled, I, which will put his own story to music for listeners. “Lyrically they will get a firsthand look into my experiences in life, love, and heartbreak,” he said. “Sonically, you will get a mix of beats that get you moving and tracks that will have you deep in your thoughts and emotions. It is truly a journey that takes you down a path of attraction, falling in and out of love, and recovering from that to love again.”

In terms of what makes him stand out in a sea of other artists, Trent believes that his lyrics separate him from the pack. “I feel like music today is all clumped up into similar categories. Unfortunately, for male R&B artists, sex is the only topic of discussion,” he said, admitting that it’s rare to hear the true emotions of men. “You don't get the Confessions or "Say Goodbye" by Chris Brown. That's what I want to bring back, something that can accurately describe the emotions being felt by many in my age group.”

In the future, Trent’s main goal is to spread his story and thoughts to the world through music. “If that means a World Tour, then sign me up. If that means Grammy nominations, sign me up,” he said. “If it means running shows for local people in my age group so that they can hear and grow, sign me up. My goal is to reach people, whatever that entails.”

You can check out more from Trent on Reverb Nation. You can also follow him on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram!

We have another great spotlight today, our first feature of 2016! As always, if you or your client is interested in being featured, please visit our Features/Submissions page for more info!

Today, we have singer/songwriter, actress, AND model, Kristinia DeBarge! The star opened up to us about her start in music as a part of the famous DeBarge clan, her own aspirations for her career, and her new upcoming show on weTV, Growing Up Hip Hop!

Growing up as a part of the famous DeBarge family R&B lineage, Kristinia noted that there is "never a dull moment" with her family. "My family, they're not only talented, but they're very funny, awesome great human beings," she said. Having that strong background in music, Kristinia knew that she wanted to sing at the young age of 3, and began taking her craft seriously at 12. "I kind of hid it from my dad [James DeBarge]," she laughed, not telling him that she had that talent and passion for singing until that time. "He was like, 'Oh my gosh! All right, let's get you in the studio!'" They stayed up until 4:30 in the morning writing and recording the song, and Kristinia was committed to the process even at that age. "He was kind of testing me to see how bad I really wanted to do it," she stated. Clearly she proved herself!

After meeting Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds at 14 and spending years after developing her voice and writing skills, Kristinia signed a record deal with Sodapop/Island Def Jam at 19! She dropped her debut album,  Exposed, in 2009, which debuted at number 23 on Billboard's Top 200. The project spawned successful singles like "Goodbye," "Sabotage," and "Future Love (Remix)" feat. Pitbull and received rave reviews from critics and listeners alike! Kristinia then went on to open for Britney Spears' 2009 The Circus World Tour, snagged a partnership with clothing retailer Wet Seal, and received several award nominations for her work!

After releasing some new music here and there over the past few years, Kristinia  is actually putting out an EP on January 7, entitled Thinkin' Out LoudShe also plans to drop a mixtape on her birthday, March 8! "I'm excited to show everybody my new sound!" Kristinia said enthusiastically. Some of the music, like the track "Church" below, has been previously released, but she also has a few new tracks for listeners to check out as well! "Church," a track that I personally gravitated to, is a song that speaks of Kristinia's own experiences with her career thus far. "People probably think I'm talking about a [romantic] relationship, but it's really my relationship with the music industry," she admitted. "It's been a lot of ups and downs, a lot of people telling me 'no," and a lot of pressure, so that's really what I'm talking about." The song shows a relentless Kristinia determined to come out on top regardless of what happens!

The same day of the EP release, weTV will air its new show, Growing Up Hip Hop, which features Kristinia, Romeo Miller, Angela Simmons, Damon "Boogie Dash" Jr., TJ Mizell, and Egypt Criss. All of them are the sons and daughters of hip hop legends, looking to make their own way! "It's a very vulnerable, emotional story that I tell," the artist admitted of the show. "You'll definitely see me open up about the DeBarge side of my family, and my music." Check out a sneak peak for the show below!

In addition to her music and the show, Kristinia is working on new acting ventures for the new year! She made her acting debut in Christmas in Compton (2012), which starred Keith David, Omar Gooding, Eric Roberts, and Sheryl Lee Ralph, and has starred in other films including School Dance and The Mint. However, she's more committed to her music right now. "I kind of promised myself that I was going to focus more on my music than ever right now," she stated. "I just really want to get back out there again. I want people to see that I haven't gone away, and that I am dedicated to it. It's my first love!"
Kristinia believes that listeners will reconnect with her and her music because she is relatable, admitting that she is a normal 25-year-old that enjoys life, and that has gone through some of the same things as other people. She uses her life experiences in her music, letting people into the good, bad, and ugly scenes she's gone through. "I think sometimes people misconstrue because I've done a lot of great things already in my career," she said. "They don't realize that I've struggled in a lot of different areas in my life." Kristinia's dealt with issues within her family concerning drugs and financial problems, but she's been able to bounce back! "I've become a better person because of it, and I was humbled because of that," the singer stated. "People can relate to that, and people aren't going to [think] 'Oh, things were handed to her because of her last name [or] because she had this much amount of success.'"

In the future, Kristinia, of course, she wants to be successful in music and film-- win awards, tour, have movies out, and create a bunch of great albums. However there's so much more she would like to do beyond just music. She's developing a makeup line, which she hopes to see in SephoraTarget, and other retailers down the road. The singer also opened up about her desire to start an anti-bullying foundation to help and inspire kids that are being bullied themselves, and put a stop to it. "I was bullied as a little girl, and so it's something that is really close to my heart," she admitted. The artist would like to see proceeds go back into the arts programs at various schools, since many schools are lacking supplies, instruments, teachers, and money in general in the arts. Kristinia is also working with her boyfriend to develop a water company to assist third world countries to provide them with clean water. "I just want to help people and be able to inspire others," Kristinia admitted.
Not only is Kristinia talented, but she seemed like a sweet, giving spirit from my interview with her! We wish her well!

You can watch Kristinia on Growing Up Hip Hop, which premieres on January 7 on weTV at 10 p.m ET. You can also check out more from her on her official website, SoundCloud, and YouTube. Be sure to connect with her on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram as well!

Another great spotlight for you all before the holidays! As always, if you are an upcoming artist, designer, dancer, etc., and are interested in being featured on The Spotlight, please visit our Features/Submissions page for more information!

Today, we have singer Xav A.! He actually hails from Prince George's County, Maryland (the same area I'm from!), and began singing when he was little. "I loved singing since I was young, and I really wanted to be a performer," Xav said. As he got older, his voice changed, hitting a really low range. and he found that his voice was not an exact match for a lot of the hits he heard on the radio. "It ended up kind of motivating me to write and produce my own music," the singer said.

As he continued to hone his craft, Xav A. joined an all-male acapella group at his alma mater, Dartmouth College, called the Dartmouth Aires. "That really just started to shape and cultivate my talent, because I was performing so much," the artist stated. Xav admitted that the group was very silly and fun, and he actually absorbed a lot of that into his own artistry. The group even went on to compete in NBC's a capella competition, The Sing-Off, on the show's third season! The group won second place, runner up to Pentatonix, and it was an experience that Xav believes helped refine his talent. "With a show like that where you're performing a new song every week, a different dance every week, it was a lot of learning stuff way quicker that I had to at any other point," he admitted. "[It was a lot of] being 'on,' and performing at my highest level more often than I ever had to do."

Currently, Xav A. is working on his music independently, writing lyrics, composing music, and even choreographing! Inspired by artists like Tina Turner, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, and even pop groups like NSYNC and the Backstreet Boys, the singer's work falls under alternative R&B, and is very laid back and great to jam to! His most recent track, "Lazy," is a prime example of Xav A.'s energetic style. "I actually wrote that song in my head when I was working at a retail job that I had," he laughed. "It was pretty literal at that point, like I would love to be doing anything else beside folding and cutting up boxes in the back of this store." On his break, he recorded his catchy tune on his phone and later developed it into a full song! He also created a colorful, fun video for the track (his very first music video in fact) which you can check out below!

"Lazy" was actually the lead track from Xav's EP, Full Circle, which he released in September 2015. The singer called the project the culmination of a "long, musical journey." After moving to NYC after graduating from Dartmouth, his R&B music wasn't as well-received as he had hoped. He then turned to creating pop music, but his heart wasn't really into it. "This EP really speaks to me trying to really come back to R&B, which is a style that I love to sing the most," Xav said, stating that his full circle journey from R&B to pop and back to R&B inspired the title. Drawing from 90s/early '00s R&B and go go music, the artist is developing good music that listeners will easily vibe to. "I really want them to see that I have a talent that I want to go down in history like that music has gone down in history," he said. "I'm trying to create something that is bigger than myself, and so this is really the start of me diving in and trying to create that. Just something that can be legendary."

Currently, Xav A. is working on a full-length album, reaching out within the NYC community to create awesome, classic music. In terms of what sets him apart from other artists, Xav states that his appearance is more vibrant and care-free, and that his music is more vulnerable than other R&B artists out right now. In the future, Xav would love to be running his own live shows, creating a grand experience, complete with video, costumes, and dancers, that listeners will love, an idea that he's actually working on now. "I think once that's created then people will really be able to see my vision and understand where I'm coming from," the artist stated.

Today, we have Electro / R&B artist Devin Nash! This singer started writing little songs and rhymes at a young age with his brother, which jump started his love and passion for music. In high school, he began to take his passion and craft more seriously, and was able to form and be a part of a music group, recording and performing for about eight years. From there, he broke away on his own, moving down to Atlanta to pursue songwriting. He has done some songwriting work for artists like LeCrae and Sisqo, as well as a few contestants from hit singing competition The Voice
The singer is inspired by artists such as Prince, Michael Jackson, Justin Timberlake, Kings of Leon, and Kanye West. "I love Kanye's drive, how he's always trying to do something more," Devin said. With these artists, among others, Devin admires their creativity and the fact that, rather than dropping back to back songs or albums, these artists take the time required to create quality, classic music. "To me, it's always been about the quality, not the quantity, even though, in today's world, it's kind of the opposite way around," he said.

Devin has been steadily grinding towards his passion of music, focusing on his own music and sound. One of his newest tracks, "Kristols," was inspired, admittedly, by a broken heart. "I wanted to look for love in all of the wrong places," Devin said of his inspiration for the song. "When I was going through what I was going through, [the song] kind of just came out. It wasn't anything that I had to force." Interestingly, the singer stated that a lot of guys really related to the track, and understood exactly what he went through.

Though he came down to Atlanta for songwriting, he began writing tracks inspired by his heartbreak that he knew were for nobody else but him, thus creating his upcoming EP, Her, The entire 8-track EP takes listeners through Devin's journey through the ups and downs of love, from the beautiful beginning to the bitter end. Through tracks like "Part Time Lover," "Her," and "Kristols," Devin sings through all of these different phases of being with someone. "It's a relationship in a record," the singer stated. "It was something that I was glad I was able to do." Devin worked on the EP with producer Ryan Marsh, and it is set for release sometime in January 2016.

Currently, the singer-songwriter is still writing for other artists, but is going to be working on new music, already planning for another EP, as well as a tour. He's also working on a vlog where he will be release short, behind the scenes videos of creating Her. "I kind of got the bug of doing my own stuff," Devin laughed. "I love doing this, so I'm going to continue to do it."

Devin believes his personal experiences, as well as inner rhythm and sound separates his music from others. "It's electro-R&B. It's definitely very moody," Devin said of his sound. "It's very honest." In terms of his future in the entertainment industry, he wants to have an extended fanbase all over the world, and assist other artists in reaching their dream of making it in the industry as well. Devin would also like to start his own label, and work with some of the same artists that have inspired him.

You can check out more from this talented artist on YouTube, Reverb Nation, and SoundCloud. You can also connect with him on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram

Another spotlight to start the week, with more on the way! As always, if you are or represent an upcoming artist, designer, producer, etc., please visit our Features/Submissions page for more information on how to be featured!

Today, we have singer/songwriter and actress Malynda Hale! Hailing from Santa Barbara, CA, Malynda got her start singing in church, and also participated in musical theater in school. "Santa Barbara was very eclectic, and I was always exposed to different genres of music," she said of her hometown. Her father was also a musician, so she grew up listening to many of the greats like Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, and Whitney Houston. "I think being exposed to so many different styles did help me to craft my own," said the singer, whose own style is within the pop/soul realm.

The singer attended Azusa Pacific University, majoring in Opera and minoring in Musical Theater under the university's Vocal Performance program. With all of this knowledge and experience in music, Malynda began booking gigs around L.A. and released her first project, No More Tears, eventually moving to New York a few years later. "I just wanted a change of pace, and I started getting into doing theater again," she said of the move. "I ended up doing shows all over, [but] never actually did a show in New York."

Hopping between the Big Apple, L.A., and eventually Chicago where she lived with her now- husband, Malynda was able to expand her career in TV, film, and commercial, and found a new love for music again, specifically in Chicago. "A lot of the projects I was involved in, I got to offer music up for those," the singer said. "I started doing gigs around there as well. It was such a different culture in Chicago, and appreciation for music." Having released several musical projects of her own , Malynda moved back to L.A. after her husband finished law school a few years ago.

This past week, Malynda has released her fourth album, Pieces Of Me, which reflects her broad taste in music. "The album is called Pieces of Me, because it is a very eclectic album," she said. "I have pop stuff, It has some soul [and] R&B. It has some throwback kind of feel stuff." The project features her latest single, "Gray," was released back in September, which Malynda co-wrote with producer Kevin Porter, who produced most of the project. "Gray," is actually an older track that was written a few years back, but then revamped for the album. "The concept behind the lyrics, which I know a lot of people can relate to, is just being in that friend zone, where you're in this kind of gray area with a person," the singer said of the track.

Pieces of Me reflects Malynda's own stories of conquering fears, love and heartbreak, and struggles in the music industry. She poured out her heart, creating a project with a lot of personal messages. "There's so many ups and downs in this album, which is how life kinda is anyway," she admitted. There's a lot of of ambiguous tracks as well, which Malynda wants listeners to interpret in their own way, and use the music to help them with their own personal journeys. "I hope people find that one song or several songs that they can connect to, that they can play over and over," the artist said. "Or hear those lyrics, and say, 'Wow, I really felt that way,' or 'Wow, I really see what Malynda was going through.'"

Malynda balances her music career with a bunch of hosting, spokesperson, and acting opportunities, which definitely keeps her on the move. "I always say that I would rather be busy than bored," she said with a laugh. She has appeared in several television series, films, and commercials, and co-hosts after-show programs on The Walking Dead and The Vampire Diaries.  Malynda is also the proud spokeswoman of Valana Minerals makeup and MASI Shop clothing. Though it keeps her really busy, Malynda wouldn't have it any other way! "I just love being a part of the entertainment industry," she stated. "If I can be an influence in the industry by being prominent in different areas, then I'm happy!"

In addition to all of her work in entertainment, Malynda also heads up a great organization called meTOO!, which fights for relationship equality. "It basically talks about the correlation and similarities between same sex relationships and interracial relationships, and how both groups face adversity," she said. "But we're all kind of going through the same things [in relationships], so you're able to say 'Hey, me too!'" Malynda and her team conduct photo shoots with different couples every few months, and share their unique stories with others. "It's really just based on love, and I think the world needs more of that," said the artist, who is in an interracial relationship herself. Those in interracial and same-sex relationships are still being discriminated against, and Malynda has created an organization that serves as a support system for them.

In terms of what sets her apart, Malynda believes that her classical background gives her voice a different tone. The singer is also very vocal about what she believes in and stands for, even in her music and on social media, and also makes a constant effort to connect and have open discussions with her listeners and others. In the future, Malynda wants to have a theme song written for a TV show, expand the meTOO! campaign, and reach as many people with her music as she can.

You can check out more from Malynda on her official website. as well as Soundcloud and YouTube. You can also follow her on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram

Today, we have singer/songwriter J.R. (aka Rome)! Hailing from Hartford, CT, the musician got his start in music while his parents were pastors at a small church. J.R. also acknowledged that, at home, his house was “filled with music.” “My mother is a singer and she would sing gospel 24/7,” he said. “I think that’s why melodies constantly play in my head in the sound of my mother’s voice. Sounds crazy I know, but she is a vital part to my creativity.” Jerome’s mother introduced him to gospel music with an R&B twist, which Jerome loved and eventually made his own. The singer was also inspired by his older brother, who produces a lot of his music. “I watched his gift grow and just really wanted to follow in his footsteps,” J.R. said. Around his sophomore year of high school, he realized that he wanted to pursue music seriously, and began to truly hone his craft for a professional career.

Inspired by artists like Tank, Tyrese, Michael Jackson, Teddy Pendergrass, and the Isley Brothers among others, J.R.’s R&B music is truly passionate and emotional, and speaks on several different topics. “From heartbreak records to taboo subjects, I try to give you all a glimpse of what goes on in my head,” the artist admitted. His latest track, “Haunted,” definitely gives us a look into his personal life as he sings of being “haunted” by the memories of an ex. “In the time period where you’re trying to move on, there are certain things that can happen,” J.R. admitted. “Sometimes no matter what you do there will be things that remind you of them. Pictures, a TV show, even smells can drudge up painful or fond memories.” In those times, the artist stated that it’s possible to try to do things to fill that void. Check out the official video for “Haunted” below!

J.R. believes his approach to creating music is what separates him from other singers out now. “I put a lot of emotion and time into creating something that the listener can feel on a deeper level than what most music gives you these days,” he said. Currently, the artist is putting the finishing touches on his debut project, Finding Myself, which is set to be released in the fall! You’ll hear his influences on the project, and will be able to get to know more about the artist and his thoughts. “It will definitely reveal a lot about me,” J.R. said. “Prepare for it. It gets wild!”

In the future, J.R. wants to truly make a lasting mark on the industry, and know that he has it in him to do so. “ I really believe that I make timeless music that the listener can enjoy for years on in,” he said. “Just wait and see.” We look forward to hearing more from this artist in the future!

You can hear more from J.R. on his SoundCloud and YouTube pages!

Today, we have singer/songwriter Adrean Black! Adrean fell in love with singing at a very young age. "I was three years old and used to go into my closet with my parents' cassette tape player and sing like no one could hear me," she laughed. "My mom also said I was the loudest pre-schooler on our little children’s choir." Adrean's mom signed her up for vocal lessons shortly after. When the singer's grandmother bought her a Walkman in the third grade, the singer would stay up all night listening to music, and she fell in love. Adrean started writing songs in middle school, and honing her craft. Eventually, Adrean went into partnership with her friends, producers Sir Elroy and Rob Flom, forming music production group RichKid Music. "That's when we really started taking it seriously, knowing that we could really do something with our talents combined," she said.

Hailing from Philadelphia, the singer acknowledged that a majority of her dad's family are musicians as well, so any get together ended up in "some kind of jam session," she said. "I was in love with not only the talent in my family but also the people on the street," Adrean admitted. "Now that I’m older and am doing shows, I am so honored to see and know so many extremely talented artists from this city. I love that I can perform alongside them and represent Philly." Inspired by various artists like Whitney Houston, Karen Clark Sheard, Tori Kelly, Kendrick Lamar, George Benson, Stevie Wonder and so many more, this gifted singer has a deep love and passion for music that shows in her projects.

Adrean released her first project, Perfect Dream, back in 2011, produced by Sir Elroy and Rob Flom. She collaborated again with them, as well as Daniel El, for her most recent project, 50/50, which was released on June 23. "50/50 is a project that, collectively, we as RichKid felt was a good showcase of my songwriting, but more on the fun, lighter side," the singer said of the EP. "We wanted this project to be feel good and up beat." The album was titled 50/50 because the songs are half pop and half R&B, blending fun, dance tracks with mid-tempo ballads for listeners. One of Adrean's favorite songs on the EP is the track "Not Worried," which hits home for her personally. "I've been a people-pleaser all my life, to the point where I’ve made decisions for my life based on what I think will make others happy, whether that would be my parents, a significant other, friends, family, etc," she admitted. "I still struggle with that today. But I remember writing this song as kind of my declaration of taking ownership of my life and my choices and not being so concerned about what others may say about it." The singer hopes that listeners enjoy the music, and are encourages to express themselves through her music!

Check out a little preview of 50/50 below!

Currently, Adrean has been performing various shows throughout the summer, and is preparing for the A3C Festival this October, which she's definitely excited about. When it comes to potential differences between her and other artists, Adrean admits that she's not "image driven," focusing more on working on her craft. "I do hope that, when people come to shows and listen to my music, that my love for this really shows through," she said. "I hope that people enjoy themselves and just really have a good time with it the way I do."

In the future, Adrean hopes to work as a songwriter and maybe even a vocal coach for other aritists, as well as running RichKid with her partners. "I’d love to have a career like James Fauntleroy," she stated. "He writes so many amazing songs and does features and background. He also puts out music when he wants and performs from time to time. That would be ideal for me!"

To hear more from Adrean, visit the singer's SoundCloud. You can also connect with her on Facebook and Twitter!

We have another great artist for you guys to check out! As always, if you are or represent an upcoming artist, designer, producer, etc. that is interested in a feature on The Spotlight, please visit our Features/Submissions page for more information.

Today, we have London-based, Bermudan singer/songwriter Bassette! She began singing at the age of 11, after she received a karaoke machine as a Christmas gift. “It was one where we could record ourselves singing to different backings,” the singer reminisced. “That was the first time I really heard myself singing, and the first time anyone else really heard me singing, also.” Bassette began making cover videos on YouTube at around 14, and got great feedback from viewers, encouraging her to pursue music as a career, using her gifts of singing and writing. “I fail at a lot of things, but singing and writing are just something that I am addicted to, and I’m pretty good at [them],” Bassette stated.

Inspired by R&B artists like Destiny’s Child, Ashanti, Lauryn Hill, and India.Arie, as well as The Weeknd and Lana Del Ray, Bassette has a soulful, yet dark sound, with heartfelt, vulnerable lyrics that will captivate listeners. “It’s just great when people can relate to and feel something with your lyrics,” the artist said. “I just want to make music that makes people feel something.” Her latest track, “Suffocating,” is a perfect example of that. Produced by Chris Hutchings, the track speaks of a toxic, painful relationship where the two involved “aren’t good for each other, but they’re afraid to be apart,” Bassette said of the song. “They would rather be unhappy together than happy alone.” Check out the track below!

Currently, Bassette is putting the finishing touches on her debut EP, Midnight Sound! “I decided to call it Midnight Sound because that’s when I find it best for me to write, at night, when it’s dark, in that mood where I contemplate life,” she said. “I want people to take away [from the project] that it’s perfectly cool to be alone and just be you.” More than likely, she will also post a few videos from songs featured on the EP, and share those with listeners as well!

In terms of what makes her unique, Bassette believes it’s the fact that she’s willing to truly be herself and express powerful messages through her music. “I feel like a lot of artists are just so loud without really saying much or they’re trying too hard to be completely different and against the norm which is OK,” the singer said. “But if you just be yourself and do what you want to do you’re bound to be different anyway.” Bassette may be new to the music world, but she’s determined to develop herself as an artist. “I just want to grow and learn from different creative thinkers,” she said of her future, hoping to connect and create new music with other artists.

You can check out more from Bassette through BGM Entertainment as well as the singer's own YouTube channel. You can also connect with her on Facebook and Twitter
Got a new spotlight for you all! As always, if you are or represent an upcoming artist, designer, poet, etc., and would like to be featured on The Spotlight, please visit our Features/Submissions page for more information.

Today, we have singer Sydney Ranee! Sydney began her musical journey rather early in life. “My mom said that before I could talk, I was always humming tunes,” she said. Believing in her talent, Sydney’s mother put her in performing art schools where her love for music began. “I got a chance to experiment with different genres of music,” Sydney said of her experience. “At the age of 10, I knew that music was definitely something I wanted to pursue.” The singer joined a jazz ensemble in high school, and also worked on gospel and R&B projects. Working with these different genres, Sydney discovered her voice and sound. You hear pieces of all of these genres in her current music!

Based in Los Angeles, Sydney admits that the city has played a major role in her music as well. “Everywhere I go, I’m surrounded by music or people in the arts, so it was very easy for me to fall into music,” she said. “I think what has helped the most was being able to see other artists performing and telling their stories.” Also inspired by Chaka Khan, Stevie Wonder, Prince, Jamiroquai, Jill Scott, and Etta James, Sydney uses her own life experiences and relationships in her lyrics and songs.

The singer recently released her new EP, Born to Run, on which she admits the title track was inspired by the movie The Notebook. “I started to imagine myself in that situation,” Sydney said. “You’re with someone that you love from the start and then suddenly they are taken from you. You get a second chance at love and you take it.” Produced by Illoquint, the track also features Stuart Sesepasara Jennings on guitar. “I hope that the listeners are able to hear the story and apply it to their own lives,” Sydney said of the track. You don’t have to only be “Born to Run” to love. I think "Born to Run" can apply to many things like music, education, or whatever you choose.

Check out the whole EP below!

Currently, Sydney is promoting her EP, and also plans to write and release more music by the end of the year. In terms of what separates her from other artists, she believes her sound is what makes her stand out. “I pulled from my roots in jazz, my love for R&B, and even threw in a little funk,” the singer said. “I love way too many styles of music to stick to one genre.” In the future, she plans to distribute her music worldwide, and speak to people through her lyrics and life experiences. Sydney also hopes to set up a tour, and visit some new places!

You can check out more from Sydney on her official website, as well as SoundCloud and YouTube. You can also connect with her on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram!
Bringing you another great artist spotlight today! If you are or represent an upcoming artist, designer, poet, etc., please visit our Features/Submissions page to request a feature on The Spotlight!

Today, we have London-based singer/songwriter Mi'das! The artist got his start in music at the age of 12, after learning a bit from his brother who played piano and his uncle who played guitar. "I also began to sing at school assemblies when I was quite young and that gave me the performing bug," Mi'das said. He eventually went off to a music college and realized there that he wanted to pursue his own music full time. "The people and music I was exposed to at college were big first inspirations," the singer stated. "From there, it's never stopped, and I'm constantly gaining new tastes and perspectives on things."

Inspired by greats like Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles as well as Fiest and Everything Everything, Mi'das' own music brings soul and emotion that pulls listeners in. The singer just released his Stronger EP, which was the final part of his three-part Story So Far series (which also included EPs Glow and Grow). "I was in the process of wanting to my own album last year and couldn't fully decide on a direction at that point," Mi'das admitted. "That led me to thinking, 'Hang on a minute. I'll release the stuff in three EPs and see what people react to and what they like about what I do.'" In terms of Stronger, the singer calls it "the fullest soundest of the three," wanting to convey to listeners "some of the complexities in life we all come across at one point or another." Mi'das' favorite track on the project is "Too Little Too Late"(the music video for the song was featured on The Spotlight earlier in the week!). The singer feels captures what he's personally about as an artist. "I like music to be honest and soulful from a place, and also to say something," Mi'das stated. Check out Stronger below!

Currently, Mi'das has been working on new music and also working and writing with new artists. He has also been writing a bit with UK blues/soul artist Jo Harman, having actually produced and co-wrote most of her first album!

In terms of what makes him stands him out from other artists, Mi'das is focused on creating timeless music. "I'm interested in music being a craft. I'm not interested in what I call 'Fashion' music," the artist said. "My music is a unique, eclectic view on soulful music that's also influenced by folk elements." In the future, Mi'das wants to build up a loyal fan base and play to audiences in the UK and Europe. Hopefully this great talent gets across the pond to us over in the States and makes an impact here as well!

You can check out more from Mi'das on his official website, and check out more of his music on YouTube! You can also follow him on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram
A spotlight to start the week! As always, if you are or represent an upcoming artist, designer, producer, etc., please visit our Features/Submissions page for more information on how to be featured.

Today on The Spotlight, we have singer Torre South! With a father as a minister, Torre grew up in the church, but didn’t start singing for a while. “My brother and sister mostly did all the singing, and I kind of stayed in the background,” Torre admitted. Around middle school, he finally began singing a little bit in church and began doing some songwriting for his brother and sister, who often sang together when his father would travel to preach. “They were like BeBe and CeCe Winans,” he joked.

Raised solely on gospel music, he didn’t even hear a secular record until middle school, but eventually fell in love with R&B listening to artists like Marvin Gaye, James Brown and Michael Jackson. He also delved into hip hop, specifically UGK and the Geto Boys, who inspired his own sound. “I think that’s where you hear a lot of the street content, where I get it from,” Torre said of hip hop specifically inspiring his own music. “That’s why I call myself Torre South. I’m still Southern. I have that Southern soul about my music.” In addition, gospel artists that he loved included Commissioned, the Winans, Andrae Crouch, and John P. Kee. The singer described his own music as a “hybrid,” where you hear a fine mix of all of these genres.

Torre knew that he wanted to pursue his music seriously at the age of 18, when he wrote a song called “Change (“To this day, I cannot remember this record. I just remember the title,” he laughed).” He sent it to someone, and got great feedback on the song, which sparked his interest in songwriting. “I knew I had a gift. I knew I had ability,” Torre said. “Once I started getting in the studio around that age, I said ‘Okay, I got it. This is something that I really want to do.’” However, when it came to work, he noted that he had always been a part of other people’s dreams, working mainly as a songwriter for various artists in the industry.

Two years ago, he decided to step out on his own, and go into creating his own music. “Ever since I’ve been putting the passion and the effort behind myself instead of other people’s projects, it’s been working. I’ve been getting a whole lot more done,” the singer said. Though he does believe he can hang with the best songwriters and continues to write for other artists, he wants to also put his own work out for listeners to enjoy “What door opens [from it], I don’t know. That’s up to God,” Torre said. “He’s the captain of my ship. I’m just sailing.”

Torre released his first solo project, Allow Me To Introduce Myself, on March 18, 2015. After recording about 20 or 30 songs, the artist started putting out tracks online for purchase. “There was a DJ down in Florida, DJ Jay Rock, that hit me up,” Torre said. “He was like, ‘Man, let’s get together and do a mixtape.” The two put the tape together relatively quickly with the tracks that Torre had previously recorded. “What I attempted to do was to give people a little bit of everything. I didn’t get into pop or EDM or anything like that,” he said of the tape. “I got some real street content records on there. I got some love songs, I got some relationship records. I tried to give people a little bit just to show a little diversity and some flavor.”

The singer also opened up on the current state of R&B, in which you see several artists switching over pop/EDM sound to branch out to gain more listeners. We actually had an interesting discussion of artists in general crossing over into different sounds other than their genre, which can be good and bad (R&B artists doing EDM/pop, etc). “I actually think that R&B is losing its identity because of it,” Torre stated. “R&B has to decide who they want to appeal to. It’s a lot of people who want real R&B vocals, arrangements, and content.” We went on to talk about how R&B typically evokes emotion, feelings of love and happiness. I wouldn’t say that R&B is necessarily dead. It’s definitely out there, but not at the level it was in the past. The industry and music itself is constantly changing, and the few great R&B artists often get drowned out because of a variety of different factors. However, I have to say I think it’s partly on consumers as well. Many of claim to want “real R&B” back, but are we supporting the artists that are out there attempting to give that to us? Something to think about.

Currently, Torre is working on an EP, “L.I.F.E. Love Is For Everyone. “It’s all about love. [The] good, bad, great, ugly, passion that type of EP. It comes easy for me to write those records,” he said. “And I feel like it’s much needed. Nobody sings about love anymore.” Sounds like it’ll be a really dope project! Torre plans to release the tape around June or July 2015.

In terms of what sets him apart from the pack, Torre believes that there is truly only one Torre South. “I think [it’s] my writing ability, my vocal arrangements. I think I have a real keen ability to put together a great song,” Torre said. “I don’t feel like there’s anyone out there who sounds like me.” He also believes that his approach is genuine, and fame is not his main goal. “I just want to be well-known and respected for my abilities,” Torre stated. “I don’t have to be ‘famous.’ I’d rather be remembered.”

In the future, Torre wants to write music for other artists, work on projects of his own, and be compensated well for it, citing The-Dream as an example. “Dream writes for all kinds of different people, but he’s still able to put out his own projects, and that’s what I want to do,” the singer said. He also sees himself going into A&R at the right label, because of his ability in artist development. Torre is definitely taking the first steps into developing an even bigger career for himself in the industry!

You can check out more of Torre's music on SoundCloud! You can also connect with him on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram

Happy Friday y’all! Excited to have another spotlight for you today! As always, if you or your client are interested in being featured on The Spotlight, visit our Features/Submissions page for more information.

Today, we have pop/R&B artist and designer Axel Jordan! Originally from Brooklyn, NY, the singer was raised by a single mom along with his brother and sister. Though he learned the importance of being kind and respectful, and doing his best in whatever he did, Axel acknowledged that creativity and expression weren’t a part of his upbringing. However, he still knew in his heart that singing and performing was what he was meant to do. “My family didn't understand it because it went against everything they knew but I did it anyway,” he said. “I sang. When nothing else made sense, I sang.” Axel joined the choir at school, and never looked back.

Growing up in the Bedford-Stuyvesant (“Bed-Stuy) neighborhood of Brooklyn, Axel admitted he “stuck out like a sore thumb” but learned to use that to his advantage. “It allowed me to understand I was different and trying to fit in would never work,” he said. “It allowed me to follow my instincts at an early age.” Axel uses that ideology in his music today, determined to simply be himself instead of a manufactured copy.

Axel dropped his debut album, Shine, in October 2014, which is a great piece of work! “This album is about my honesty—growing up, falling in love, falling out of love and all the in-betweens,” he said. Recorded in both New York and LA, the album details Axel’s own life experiences. He couldn’t bring himself to choose a favorite track, stating that they are all pretty special to him in their own ways. “When I wrote Shine, it was in a moment when I felt my strongest after feeling very lost and insecure for a long time,” the artist said “The lyrics and emotion are truthful in expressing that. I like to think that every track has that strength and honesty factor.” You can purchase Shine on iTunes now. Check out a few tracks from the album below!

In addition to his music, Axel is also very involved in the fashion world, and has launched a custom clothing line SHANE by AxelJordan! Fashion was always something the singer was interested in, but he confessed that he was being taken seriously by other designers for requests for clothes for his own shows and appearances. Instead, he started making his own clothes himself. “In the beginning, I struggled a bit, messed up a lot of fabrics but eventually, I got pretty good at it,” Axel said. “And like any craft, when you give it time and dedication, it develops and grows.” His pieces are truly creative and daring, which is exactly what he going for. “I wanted my clothing to be loud, to make a statement,” the artist declared. “My clothing is about one’s ability to be free, inspired, bold and truly confident.”

Axel’s main focus right now is promoting his album. However, he admits that “as a creative mind, the wheels are always turning,” so there will definitely be some new projects on the way from this great creative! In terms of what sets him apart from other artists, Axel believes it is his individuality, creativity, and difference of expression with his life circumstances. He hopes to continue to grow and expand his platform as both artist and designer.
