VH1 has green lit their original hip hop drama, The Breaks, to be turned into a series!

The TV movie is based on Dan Charnas' best-selling book The Big Payback: The History of the Business of Hip-Hop, which is considered one of the most comprehensive accounts of the history and business of hip-hop.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, with a cast ensemble that included Wood Harris, Mack Wilds of The Wire fame, Wu-Tang Clan member Method Man, and David Call from Gossip Girl,  The Breaks has gone on to become the #2 cable original movie for adults 18-49 since airing back in January.

The general manager of VH1, Chris McCarthy, said of the upcoming TV series, "The Breaks’ is VH1 at its best, intersecting '90s nostalgia with hip-hop for the masses. Both the viewers and critics have spoken, and we couldn’t be happier to continue telling the story that has already connected with millions of pop culture fans."

There isn't a set premiere date for the show yet but stay tuned to The Spotlight for more info as it becomes available!

Looks like Hova's house, Roc Nation has another artist looking to branch out because of differences. After Maybach Music Group rapper, Wale left their Management department last year, their British star Rita Ora has "filed a lawsuit that addresses the current state of Roc Nation and tests California's famous "seven-year rule" on personal service contracts" according to The Hollywood Reporter.

After becoming more known for its athletes that are signed to the label more than its artists, Rita says she has felt like an orphan and doesn't feel the involvement in her career like she felt when first signed at the age of 18 in 2008. Her attorney, Howard King said, "Rita's relationship with Roc Nation is irrevocably damaged."

Let's hope whatever comes of this issue that it ends soon because we need some new Rita Ora music!

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the 1997 hit ensemble film, Soul Food, will be getting a sequel! George Tillman Jr., who wrote and directed the original, is writing the new script with Nathan Skulnik.

The movie was based on a close-knit African-American family who had a tradition of eating a big dinner together every Sunday but began to fall apart after the death of their matriarch. It included the likes of Vanessa Williams, Vivica A. Fox, Nia Long, and Mekhi Phifer. The film, which earned $43.7 million, also spawned a Showtime TV series, Soul Food: The Series, which aired from 2000 through 2004.

The new sequel will focus on the new millennial generation of the family and their quest to return to their roots of family and tradition. Stay tuned to The Spotlight and all our social media links for more information as they become available for the movie. And if you haven't seen the original, definitely check it out, along with the Showtime series! I own the entire series on DVD!

The Hollywood Reporter has come out to say that Jennifer Lopez may be coming back to American Idol—to replace Mariah Carey! Their sources say that Idol producers, along with Fox executives, began negotiations with J. Lo, who was a fan-favorite judge during seasons 10 and 11, to rejoin the show. However, when Mariah got wind of it, she threatened to sue! THR also went on to report that producers want to bring Jennifer back for the season finale next month regardless, and that no judge’s job on the panel (not even Randy’s) is safe!
Reps for Fox and Mariah both denied THR's report. Show producer Nigel Lythgoe told THR: "I have not been included in any conversation regarding replacing Mariah with Jen this season."

A show source also tells THR that possible replacements include a music professional, "not necessarily a star" to join the panel next year (THANK YOU!).

These are all reports, but who knows what’s going to happen with AI. This is why I think that this show should have been canceled quite a few seasons ago. When your focus is on who’s on the judging panel instead of who’s singing on stage, there’s a problem. But whatever. FOX will keep this show going until the last wheel falls off, it looks like.

Do you think that Mariah will be replaced, either with Jennifer or someone else? Is it time for the whole show to end?
