Another great spotlight to start the week! If you are or represent an upcoming artist, designer, producer, etc., please visit our Features/Submissions page for a feature on the site!

Today, we have pop artist Nick Deutsch! He was introduced to music at a young age through his family. His mother, who was a teaching pianist, always played on their grand piano at home, which Nick and his other siblings would dance to. “Music was really always a present art form in my life,” he stated. With that upbringing, Nick began piano lessons himself, learning classical and jazz music, but admitted that he didn’t practice much until he was a teenager. However, piano soon became his primary instrument to compose music.

His high school years, he noted, were rough, but soon found another outlet to help him through. “I withdrew into the world of songwriting as a means of self expression and have kept it as a valuable tool,” Nick said, even recording demos on cassette tapes. Nick went on to study at NYU, which allowed him to connect with various songwriters in New York, opening him up to different opportunities to expand his music career.

As a ‘90s kid, Nick was inspired by artists like NSYNC, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, No Doubt and Nirvana. “While often cheesy, there’s a huge sense of chorus and melody in that music that’s undeniable,” he said. He also likes country artists like Kacey Musgraves and Miranda Lambert, as well as different British pop artists. The singer has always had a passion for music, and honestly couldn’t see himself doing anything else. “I have such a wild horse mind and music is the one thing that centers and calms down my thoughts,” Nick admitted. “At this point, I'd be miserable doing anything else. When you can't walk away from something, it's a good sign it's meant to be.”

His latest track, “Under Your Ocean,” from his upcoming EP Heartsaver, was inspired by an unhealthy relationship where the singer admitted he felt like he was drowning. “We both naively thought "love alone" would be enough to make things work but I quickly realized it wouldn't,” Nick said, stating that the song, written and recorded with his longtime producer Joey Auch, is probably the heaviest track on the project. “I think the lyrics do a great job of revealing the confusion of being in that space,” the artist added. Check out the track below!

Heartsaver, which is expected to be released in late summer, is mostly upbeat pop, other than “Under Your Ocean.” “Every song looks at love from different angles be it friendship, infatuation, heartbreak etc.,” Nick said of the project. “Listeners can definitely expect to hear a story in every song!”

Currently, the artist is working on a few new tracks, but is primarily focused on performing and “getting Heartsaver out to the world.” As far as what makes him stand out from other artists, Nick believes it’s the fact that listeners really get his experiences from his music. “There's a lot of great songs on the radio but I often feel like the personal narrative has been left behind. The writing is often so vague and generalized that anyone can sing the song,” he stated. “Sometimes that's definitely the point, but I always want to feel like the fingerprint of the story is in the vocal. I think that people can relate to my songs but also feel like they understand me as a person without having to research.”

In the future, Nick’s biggest goal is to be able to sustain himself fully as an artist, committed to working hard towards making his career the best it can be. He would also love to write for other artists, as well as eventually grow into a position to be able to mentor others and work in music education. “There's so much misinformation out there and I'd love to be in a place where I can help people work on their craft without losing their mind,” Nick said.

You can check out more from Nick on his official website, as well as SoundCloud and YouTube. You can also connect with him on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram

Truly love being able to share these great upcoming stars with you all, and it's awesome to hear from those of you guys that are becoming fans of their work!

Today, we have UK-based singer/songwriter Yoji! The R&B/pop singer was raised in London with a family of artists. With the support of her family, Yoji began learning how to play piano at the age of 8, but was trying her hand at song writing even before that. “I used to write songs in the playground with my friend and then perform them to everyone in a big showcase,” she said. “They didn’t really make any sense looking back but it was the best part of my day making music in the breaks.”

After moving to the area of Suffolk at 11, Yoji continued piano lessons under teacher Phil Graves, learning classical music as well as jazz. She was inspired so much by the talent and artistry of Alicia Keys as well. “The way she combined piano and voice was sensational and was an example for me and opened up my creativity to start writing songs using the piano as a tool.,” the singer stated. Throughout her time in school, she has continued to write and perform, putting her full focus on music after her graduation.

Yoji is inspired by other artists such as Amy Winehouse, Jill Scott, Lauryn Hill, Stevie Wonder, and Aretha Franklin. "Artists that play the piano and sing are a great demonstration on how to combine the two in performance," she said. "They all invoke emotions within me and they create powerful music." Her debut EP, OceanGovern SunshineRule, was released in 2015 and shows her influences, with Yoji creating a collection of powerful songs relating to love. The title actually reflects the meaning of her name, which is Japanese for "ocean, govern," and "sunshine, rule." Yoji explained, "My mum studied fashion and loved Yohji Yamamoto’s name. My parents took out the letter ‘h’ as they thought that made the name look more feminine." The singer went on to add, "I think the title works well with the meanings and messages in my music as it’s about discovering self-worth, being empowered, using emotions to create something positive and taking control of your own destiny."

One of Yoji's favorite tracks on the project, "I Need More," is an empowering track for women, encouraging them to never settle in love. "I wrote [it] after being let down in a relationship and vowing not to let it happen again," she explained. "My friends have also shared similar experiences and I wanted to write a song to remind us that we don’t need to rely on anyone as we are powerful enough on our own. That’s why in the song I say, ‘I’ll be a fearless knight, fighting for what’s right, I won’t lose sight of my worth.'" The singer added, "In the song the women becomes her own savior and is not the stereo typical damsel in destress waiting for the man to fight for her."

Currently, Yoji is recording songs for her next EP, as well as working on new collaborations with other artists. She also plans to have another tour in the UK this summer to promote OceanGovern SunshineRule!

The artist believes that what sets her apart from the rest of the pack is creating music that will evoke emotions and actually have meaning in other people's lives. "I feel like my music is honest, [and] at times vulnerable because of that," Yoji said. "I aspire to write songs that people can relate to."
In the future, she wants to continue to grow with her music, and hopes that more people will hear it. She also wants to create a full album with great musicians contributing to it. "I’d then love to showcase it in a world tour as I love to travel, explore new places and most of all perform on stage!" Yoji added.

You can check out more from Yoji on SoundCloud and YouTube. You can also follow her on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram

Another great spotlight for you all today! If you are or represent an upcoming artist, designer, writer, etc., and are interested in a feature on The Spotlight, please visit our Features/Submissions page for more info!

Today, we have indie pop singer/songwriter, Chloe Baker, better known as Bitter’s Kiss! Hailing from New Jersey, Chloe grew up in a musical family and got the bug when she was really young. “I grew up around instruments and have been singing ever since I was really little,” she said, also stating that she loved writing and musical theater as well. “This love of writing and singing meant making music from as young as I can remember.” With a recording studio in her family home, Chloe’s father eventually allowed her to record her first original song when he though she was old enough.

Growing up in a diverse area, the singer was inspired by people of different races and socioeconomic status, but also acknowledged her parents helped to mold her and her music as well. “My parents gave me a lot of freedom to make my own choices growing up and I think that has helped me mature and grow as a person as well,” Chloe stated. She also has developed her own eclectic style of music due to the variety of music she grew up listening to, from rap to country music. “I think whether it is rap, country, rock, or pop music, the music that inspires me is the music that sends a message and has meaning behind it,” she said. “Some artists that I think do this are The Beatles, Carole King, and N.W.A.”

Chloe admitted that it was always her dream to make music a full-time career, though she wasn’t sure if it would be a stable occupation for her. “Once I put my songs on SoundCloud and got a great response, it showed me that I do have a shot at doing this as a career and I decided it was what I was going to do,” she admitted. She chose to the name “Bitter’s Kiss,” for her artist name after recording her first album, deciding that the name fit her music well. “Like my music, it is a name that can represent that good things exist within bad ones and vice versa,” Chloe revealed. “Also, since I was just starting out and wasn’t sure what direction my music would take, I wanted to classify myself as a project. Bitter’s Kiss started as a project name that has now stuck as my artist name.”

In her career thus far, Chloe has garnered attention all over the globe, creating powerful songs dealing with love, religion, suicide, etc. Her most recent track, “No One Will,” is a song discussing trust issues in relationships, one that Chloe believes is not against love, but shows the downside of love. “It is basically saying that even though it is sad not [to] be loved, not loving protects you from being hurt,” she admitted. “The inspiration for this song comes from the stories about love hurting people both physically and emotionally that I hear about and witness all the time.”

Check out the video for the track below!

Currently, the artist is working on a new EP as well as some new EDM music! She is also planning to do more live shows this coming summer as well as continue to work towards becoming a better artist. In terms of what separates her from the back, she believes it’s her personality and messages that shines through her music. “I think that my sound is very raw because I am not trying to be anyone else but myself,” Chloe said. “I am not afraid to get messages across and discuss issues often ignored. I take certain situations and show a different side of them. Mostly, I think a lot of people today get caught up in the glitz and glam of stardom and I am just in it because of my love for music.”

In the future, Chloe wants to be touring, building up her fan base, and connecting with more people all over the world as Bitter’s Kiss. She would also love to collaborate with some of her favorite artists like John Legend and Kendrick Lamar. “I am trying to take things day by day and make the best decisions to better my chances of reaching these goals,” Chloe stated.

You can check out more from Chloe as Bitter’s Kiss on her official website and SoundCloud. You can also connect with her on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram!

Love featuring a diverse group of artists, designers, and on The Spotlight! That's the best part of the job! As always, if you or your client would like to be featured on the blog, please visit our Features/Submissions page for more information.

Today, we have rock/pop group Young-Borra! The group, comprised of Jonas Young-Borra (lead vocalist/lyricist), Garrett DeTemple (vocals/bass/lyricist), and  Michael Curley (production), definitely has a unique sound that resonates with listeners. Jonas first met and began playing music with Garrett during their time at Purchase College in New York.

Jonas, the group’s founder, was raised in the Bronx by his mother, who was a former Broadway actress/singer, and his father, a jazz saxophonist who studied with Jimmy Lyrons. “All I heard until age 10 was pre-1970's jazz, classical and Broadway music,” the singer admitted. “I didn't discover anything beyond that until my dad's guitar player left some cassette tapes at the house with music from the 60's, 70's and 80's. He soon fell in love with artists like Van Halen, Fine Young Cannibals, David Bowie, The Village People, the Rolling Stones, and The Beatles. Though Jonas admits that each of the band members have their own unique interests, they all “weren't so much into what was the "norm" that other kids were listening to,” he said. “Together, our New York, fast-talking, fast-walking lifestyles certainly have affected our sound.”

Young-Borra’s latest track, “Surround Sound,” is an example of the group’s standout sound. Inspired by the band VHS or Beta, Jonas began working on the track on GarageBand a long time ago, but didn’t began working on it again until adding Michael on as producer. “Mike took the original ideas I had and melded it into something new,” Jonas said. “Garrett and I worked on lyrics until, after changing the melody several times, we finally got something that we liked.” The band recently released a music video for the song, which was mixed and mastered by the head of production at Purchase and Michael’s former professor, Peter Denenberg (Spin Doctor's "Two Princes" producer). The video itself was directed and edited by Erik Christopher Lopez. Check out the video below!

In the future, the group wants to travel the world, playing the biggest stages for audiences. “Young-Borra is a lifelong project now!” Jonas said. “Our goal is to be playing and writing music full time. This is all I want, all we want. It's exciting.” Jonas himself wants the band to “exist with relevance,” not just being the next best thing coming out for the moment, and then the fire fades out. The group is definitely talented, passionate and fired up, so be on the lookout for more from them in the future!

You can check out more from the band on their official website, SoundCloud, and YouTube. You can also connect with them on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram!
After releasing two EPs and other songs, including popular covers, Tori Kelly is set to release her debut studio album Unbreakable Smile on June 23! I just had the opportunity to see her perform this past weekend, and heard some of her new songs, so I had to review the album for the blog.

Seeing Tori live, it seemed to me like she was very sweet and down to earth. She’s been releasing music for a while, and seems determined to not let the industry change her or her music. Unbreakable Smile is a clear reflection of all of that. The album is a mix of pop and soul, and speaks on the ups and down on relationships, the importance of staying positive in life, and her refusal to conform to the industry. It’s a really awesome, fun album, perfect for the start of summer, but it’s also filled with great messages that we can all relate to in some way. With teens as Tori’s target audience, this is a great album for them to listen to, hopefully learn something from, and be inspired.

Check out my review below!

The album starts out with the simple intro “Where I Belong,” where Tori discusses finding her destiny in life as a singer. “I’m just a girl with her guitar, trying to give you my whole heart,” she sings. She belongs on stage and in the studio, creating and singing great music for her fans. That’s where her heart is. The title track, “Unbreakable Smile,” is really upbeat and fun, and really showcases Tori’s positive outlook on her career and life in general. Even though she’s famous, she refuses to conform to the industry. She wants to use her name and music for good. She realizes that many people will think she’s naĂŻve for this mentality, but she feels like everybody makes a clear decision on how they choose to live, especially with fame and fortune. I definitely agree and applaud her for her resolve.

The lead single, “Nobody Love,” is probably one of my favorite tracks on the album. It’s about being a little apprehensive to have that special love with a person, but, in the end, you don’t want or need to run once you’ve found it. “I try my best to fight to it, say ‘I hate you,’ but I always stay,” Tori sings of her love I am in love with the beat, and the hook is so catchy! Plus Tori’s vocals are really incredible on this one, and she sounds like she’s really having a lot of fun on the track. “Expensive,” which features a rap from Daye Jack,” is a message from Tori letting us know that money doesn’t buy love. She’s a simple girl. She’d rather spend time with her special someone, than be showered with expensive gifts. Again, this is another important well-needed message for those who believe that gifts are all that’s needed to keep someone.

Should’ve Been Us” is a mid-tempo song with a slight 90s vibe with Tori wondering about a past love and what would’ve happened with them if they had moved forward with their relationship. The ballad “First Heartbreak” changes the overall upbeat tone of the album at this point. Tori opens up and shows her vulnerability as she expresses the fact that she’s never been really emotional, but now that she’s in this relationship, she’s changed. She’s looking toward the future with this person, and even worries that one day he might leave her for some reason, and doesn’t want that to happen. “Guess that means I really love you, cuz I’m afraid to make mistakes,” Tori sings. “If you ever left me, that would be my first heartbreak.”

I Was Made For Loving You” features the talented Ed Sheeran, and provides a calm and beautiful acoustic for the album. Their voices were truly flawless together. “I was made for loving you, even though we may be hopeless hearts just passing through,” the duet sings collectively. Such a great collaboration…another favorite of mine! On the mid-tempo “City Dove,” Tori admits that she doesn’t know her fate, especially in the ever-changing music industry, but she’s going to continue to work towards her greater purpose.

Tori admitted herself on Twitter that “Talk” is “about wanting to tell the world to go away.” All she hears is talk, but no one is really saying anything of importance. This song can definitely be related to her career (and probably her personal life as well), though the message is somewhat muddled. “Funny (Live)” is the only live acoustic song on the album, and I loved it so much! Tori sings yet again about not giving up your soul in this industry. “What is your definition of a true superstar?” she asks. “Is it beauty? Is it money? Is it power? Is it fame?” The deep passion in her vocals on this track literally gave me chills!

Art of Letting You Go” details an experience that many of us have gone through: struggling to let someone go whether they now have another significant other or just weren’t good for us period. “California Lovers,” which features LL Cool J, is perfect for summertime, bringing a chill Californian vibe to the album. Tori sings of not missing a former love, until the summertime hits, and she’s reminded of all of their great memories together. It’s very different to hear LL on this, but his verse worked well on the song.

We get more vulnerability from Tori on the ballad “Falling Slow,” who admits that she’s not a perfect person, and she’s going to mess up undoubtedly in her relationship. However, she doesn’t plan to give up and hopes her significant other doesn’t either. This was also another track where Tori’s vocals and harmonies really stand out. The standard album ends on a high note with the upbeat “Anyway.” Again, she admits she’s not perfect, but “this is the only that I know how to be,” she sings. Regardless if people leave or stay, she’s going to be herself. “Take it or leave it babe. I’m not gonna change,” Tori sings firmly. “If you don’t understand, I don’t need you anyway."

I truly loved this album, and found myself connecting with just about every song in some way.Not only is Tori an amazing singer and songwriter, but she uses her music to motivate listeners and get us all thinking. Her inspiring messages, like on "Funny," shine on the project. There was a perfect balance of fast-paced, mid-tempo, and slow tracks, as well, and the songs were all mostly catchy and/or memorable in someway You can also hear her clear-cut passion and dedication towards her craft every time she opens her mouth to sing. It's that soul and passion that is much needed in this industry, and will catapult Tori to the top. She definitely gave her all on this debut!

The bonus track version of the album gives listeners two extra tracks, “Dear No One” (previously released) and “Beautiful Things.” You can purchase Unbreakable Smile on iTunes, other digital outlets, and in stores on June 23!

RATING: ★★★★★ (Five stars)

Last summer, we had the chance to feature Australian pop/rock artist Travis Caudle, and it was great to share his story. Well today (May 27), Travis has released his latest EP, Your Little Trick, globally!

The EP is really upbeat and great to groove to, which is perfect since summer is right around the corner! In addition to just great overall music, Travis offers awesome lyrics that listeners will definitely connect with as they hear the project.

Check out my review below!

The uptempo "Outta My Head" starts the project on a high, with a catchy hook that's bound to have you humming and singing along (trust me on that!). Travis' mind is super focused on other things, and he often blocks out outside circumstances and people, which he sings about on the upbeat track. "There's so much I got doin', even more that's brewing," he sings. You can really feel great, high energy on this track, which is good to hear right from the start on an EP. The inspirational "Something's Gotta Happen" keeps that energy going! In my mind, I called this "The Get-Your-Life-Together track," because this is the exact speech that you may find yourself giving to others (or yourself) when it comes to making positive changes in life. You can either stay asleep and remain stagnant, or you can make a move and make something happen! This is definitely one of my favorites on the EP.

We get a bigger taste of Travis' vulnerability on tracks "Wide Open" and"Back To You," which I really enjoyed. The touching ballad "Heart and Soul," is another track that's bound to move listeners, as the singer encourages us all to let go and move towards our deepest passions. "If you could just let go of everythin’ you know, I wonder what it would do," Travis croons. "To have all your dreams come true, And get to the heart and soul of you." The mid-tempo "Never Quite Enough" ends the six-track EP, as Travis contemplates the mundane motions of life at time, hoping that one day he is able to free his mind and get to a better place. I know I've been there.

Stream the EP below!

I LOVED this project. There is definitely great music, as the project has a nice pop/rock mix with a touch of country (yeah I peeped it, and I loved that too!). He doesn't give you a project filled with all ballads, or all upbeat, energetic tracks. It's a great balance. However, the lyrical content Travis brings to the table is what really makes the project stand out. His reflective messages on each song is what makes Your Little Trick so appealing. It's really a great listen that I encourage you guys to check out!

RATING: ★★★★★ (Five stars)

You can purchase the EP on iTunes now! Also, check out more from Travis on his official website, as well as YouTube and SoundCloud. You can also connect with him on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram!

I recently featured music and did an interview with alternative R&B/pop singer Ash! On February 10, 2015, the artist dropped her debut project, The Perfect EP, for listeners! The four-track EP was produced by T Brown, who has worked previously with Janelle Monae (Ash is also a background singer for The Electric Lady!).

Ash’s debut reflects her own feelings on love, and, between the actual music and lyrics, listeners are bound to really connect with the EP! "The Perfect EP, I hope helps change the conversation in music. I think the way I've chosen to write about love will add a cool twist to the dialogue that so many artists are already having. At the very least I hope it compels people to love deeper," Ash said of the project.

Check out my review of The Perfect EP below!

“I feel like the world is ours, long as we are, are together…” The mid-tempo track, “Lost” begins the EP as Ash sings about her life and love. Even though sometimes she feels like she is far from where she is supposed to be, she’s never lost as long as she is with the one she loves. Any risks or costs are worth it to her. Personally, I've been here. When things are going wrong, having people, romantic or otherwise, in your life that can lift you up and be there for you is incredible. No greater feeling.

“I know you don’t want my love…I know you don’t need it, but I love you anyway…” The second song on the project, “Anyway,” is a fun, upbeat dance track that I really loved. Ash sings of wanting to make things work with her love, even though he doesn’t seem to want her. Though it all, she loves him—when he makes her happy and even when they disagree and he pisses her off! That’s true, unconditional love, that is really hard to find!

“No regrets, no apologies…love affair between you and me. I don’t care what nobody thinks cuz all I want is all I can see…”Dear Dream” is a softer ballad where Ash describes her love as being the perfect dream for her. No matter what anyone has to see, he’s all she can see and is all she really needs. It was a very beautiful track that I had on repeat for quite a while.

“You don’t have to be, all these things are extreme…Let’s forget them, and just enjoy the ride…” The EP ends with Ash’s single, “Perfect,” which was featured on The Spotlight earlier this year. The energetic and bubbly track is the perfect way to end the project! The light-hearted song gives the message of finding a love that will do the simple things and Ash states that he’s perfect just the way he is. She doesn't need much. The song was actually a tribute to her father, who recently passed away. It’s a very fun but real track to listen to. When you really love someone, you realize that he or she doesn’t have to be perfect. Their flaws and imperfections don’t matter. The love you have for that person outweighs it all.

The EP is really chill and relaxing to listen to. When I spoke to Ash, she seemed like such a bright, fun, and positive woman, and it definitely shows in this project. Her vocals and the music production shine on their own, but the message of love throughout the EP shines even brighter. As I listened, I realized that this EP doesn't even have to be seen just in terms of romantic love. It's all about love in general. Regardless of what you go through, when you have real love in your life--from your significant other, your family, or your friends--it's truly a beautiful thing. I loved the EP, and will definitely be having it play on rotation on my iPhone!

RATING: ★★★★★ (Five stars)

I have the first official spotlight of 2015 for the blog! I have at least three other great artists lined up that I’m working to get up within the next week or so, so be on the lookout! If you are or represent an upcoming musical artist, producer, designer, etc., and would like to be featured on The Spotlight, please visit our Features/Submissions page for more information!

Today, we have Flexy the Artist! Raised in St. Louis, Missouri, this songwriter-singer grew up around music, as his parents and grandparents were all musicians themselves. At home, he listened to jazz and R&B artists, as well as the late great Michael Jackson, who he notes as one of his biggest inspirations. During his freshman year of college, one of his fraternity brothers sent him a goofy freestyle as a joke, and he decided to record one himself. “People liked it. It was really bad,” Flexy joked. “I’ve always had a great voice, at least, so it was easy to listen to, but ever since then, I’ve been going strong.” He began taking his music and career seriously, recording and performing at various shows.

Inspired by Michael Jackson, Usher, Bruno Mars, and Ludacris, Flexy effortlessly blends pop, hip-hop, R&B, and electronic music to create his own standout sound. The singer released his EP, Route 63, in April 2014. “Frustration with my music situation living in Missouri, balancing school with music, and the people around me who I feel like didn’t understand me inspired the EP,” Flexy admitted. He went down to Louisiana the summer before for an internship to get away and figure out what he wanted to do after school, and ended up writing and arranging 80% of the project. “Route 63 is the direct route between Missouri and Louisiana,” Flexy explained the title. “It’s written in the future, kinda like a view of what I want/what won’t hold me back.”

Two of his favorite tracks on the EP are “Gabby” and “Is It Worth It.” “[I choose] ‘Gabby,’ because it was the most experimental test for me context wise and I had a blast making it,” he said. “‘[And] Is It Worth It’ because it summarizes the entire mindset of people that aim to step out their comfort zone. The song is full of double entendres that can be interpreted by anyone in their own way.” He further explained about Route 63 that “this EP is a three part project written in the future so compared to my other works it may be hard to comprehend but looking at my other works the audience can see and feel exactly who I am.”

Flexy has now relocated to Los Angeles, and is currently working on an EDM track with a producer from Italy, while still promoting Route 63. He feels that his “songwriting, unique voice, genre-blending, great looks (*haha*), and artist transparency.” In terms of his future in the entertainment industry, he wants to be the best as what he does. “I want to be respected by the masses for my craft. I want to be the best ‘me’ possible.”

You can hear and learn more about Flexy the Artist on his official website, SoundCloud, and YouTube, and connect with him on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram!
Some new music for you! Alternative pop/R&B singer Ash, who has toured the last four years singing background with Janelle Monae, has dropped a new track called "Perfect."

Ash's pretty vocals really shine on the energetic and bubbly track! She sings a light-hearted message about finding a love that will do the simple things and that's perfect just the way he is. She doesn't need much. It's a very fun and light song that you just can't help grooving to! The song is the first single off her upcoming project, The Perfect EP, which is set to be released on February 10, 2015!

Check out the track below!

You can purchase "Perfect" on iTunes now! You can also listen to more from Ash on SoundCloud, as well connect with her on Twitter and Instagram. I'm also working on getting an interview with her soon, so be on the lookout!

I really am grateful for the opportunities to interview the up and coming! I got an email from a reader last week saying how he appreciates my features, and how he’s found some great artists because of the spotlights I do, which made my day. Doing what I love and having people connect with that is the greatest feeling!

Just to let y’all know, I have some great events and interviews to finish out 2014, so definitely be on the lookout! Celebrity news has been pushed to the backburner a lot, I know, which I’m trying to get back on track with. Pray that I find a balance come 2015!

Ok, enough personal stuff. I have another spotlight for you all today. Check out Swedish alternative pop-rock duo Manfred Kidd! The duo, composed of members Victor Crusner and Fredrik Folkestad, first met in elementary school but then went their separate ways for a while. They randomly bumped into each other on a tram in Göteborg, and discovered that they both had turned to music, which inspired them to work together. “The music we made became something neither of us could do on our own,” they said in a statement. “Finding that out was probably the moment we knew we wanted to do this.”

Being from Göteborg ,Sweden, Manfred Kidd is inspired by the seasonal changes of the country from grey to color, which they say is a true reflection of their own music. “As we see it, our sound is color while our lyrics are more of that grayer shade,” the group acknowledged. The duo also honored the Beatles’ George Harrison as an influence on their music.

The duo released their EP, Where Were You When You Were Us (WWYWYWU) on May 20, 2014 (you can get your copy here!). The debut single from the EP, “Lights” was actually a homage to Göteborg, and Victor and Fredrik produced the track together. “We have different roles within our collaboration, but keep it between us throughout the making,” the group said. Check out Manfred Kidd performing the track below!

How they function as a duo and “the electricity of our live set” is what Manfred Kidd feels sets them apart from other groups. In the future, they want to be actively touring and to keep putting out great music.

I absolutely love how many international artists I have had the opportunity to feature on The Spotlight this year! It’s always cool to feature people outside of the U.S. to give you all a little taste of what the outside world really has to offer. It’s also allowed me to talk with a lot of awesome people! Getting back into the swing of things after all of these vacations and whatnot, so I have even more in the works!

Today, we have Australian pop/rock artist Travis Caudle! Travis admitted that he fell in love with music at a really young age. “Dad was always into stereo systems in a big way and buying the latest records and Mum plays piano, so it was always around,” he said, even recalling his first concert experience at the toddler level! “I clearly remember being at a Neil Diamond concert in Perth, Western Australia where I’m from, when I was two or three and wondering why he had red, green and blue hair (the lights!!!). Mum and Dad must not have been able to find a babysitter that night!” he joked.
At 15, Travis’ father bought him an old classical guitar, and he was taught a few chords by a family friend. Travis quickly taught himself to play guitar, and discovered that he could also sing. From there, he tried songwriter, and began to play sets around his area with some cover and original songs. Travis’ older brother would often buy him albums for his birthday, which sparked his love of music even more. Often, they along with friends would go to gigs by Australian bands, which had an impact on Travis’ own music. Inspired by bands like The Church, The Cure, Lloyd Cole and The Commotions, the singer admitted that his music was influenced by home. “I often get told my music has an international flavor but simultaneously a distinctly Australian sound,” he said. Songwriters like Steve Kilbey, Colin Hay, George Harrison and Lloyd Cole are also some of Travis’ favorite songwriters that he looks to for inspiration. “Their lyrics have an amazing depth and poetry to them that never cease to amaze me,” the artist acknowledged.

Travis recorded his first two electric albums, Trips Between Worlds and Signals, with producer Tim Powles, who also serves as the drummer for Australian band The Church. “This is where I first experienced completely immersing myself in music and creativity in the studio because I was in Sydney and away from home,” he recalled. Most recently, the singer released his EP, It’s Just You, which dropped in December 2013. “The EP is a collection of songs that straddle a few different themes like life on the road, loss and being a new parent but, overall, it’s about the process of stripping back your conditioning as a human being and questioning your life and who you are, at the very deepest levels so that you can enjoy the moment you’re in” Travis said of the project. “Much of it focuses on taking back the power you have to change all the habits and emotions that have over time come to run you, but don’t necessarily serve you.” Check out the video the title track, “It’s Just You,” below!

Currently, Travis is busy recording more songs with US-based Grammy-nominated Australian producer Mark Moffatt. The studio experience, in spite of the obvious exhaustion it can bring, is still a thrilling time for this artist! “It’s like there’s a huge amount of space to create and experiment and you never quite know where a song is going to ultimately end up, so being in that atmosphere of potential is a unique type of energetic experience that I find exhilarating,” he said. No word on when those songs will be released just yet, but Travis is sure to have some great music up his sleeves for listeners! He’s also about to head out on a few tour dates in the States, so be sure to check him out!

In terms of what sets him apart from other artists, he believes that his creativity that stretches beyond any one particular genre that makes him stand out. He does what he feels, regardless of what people may think, which is honestly rare in music these days. “It’s pretty simple for me – I hear something in my head and then I do whatever I have to do to get it out of my head and onto an album, whether it’s going to be considered cool or not,” he stated. In the future, the singer-songwriter wants to have a successful career, and connect with others through his music. However, that’s not his first concern when it comes to his career. “The most important thing to me is to live an inspired life and produce inspired music,” Travis said. “When a song comes to me from nowhere and I’m wandering around trying to make sense of what I’m hearing and get it out of my head, there’s nothing like it. I’m totally in the music and the thing that’s furthest from my mind is my career. If I can stay inspired and keep feeling compelled to record and play music, that would be a great future."

Today, the spotlight is on Irish pop/rock band, The Enemies! Founding members Ronan McQuillan (lead vocals/guitar) and actor Colin O’Donoghue (vocals/guitar) started the band back in 2003, adding along members John Boy Berkley (bass), Johnny Crean (guitar), and Dazzy Oglesby (drums) along the way. In 2010, the guys finally buckled down and got serious about their music career, getting in the studio to record together! “You have to have a passion for music to pursue it as a career. Like any career really. Being surrounded by creative and talented people makes it an easy decision. There has to be a belief in what you do to continue through the bad times. And lots of sacrifice,” the band said of their career. That strong passion is definitely clear in their music!

Check out more about The Enemies below!

Inspired by the likes of The Beatles, the Rolling Stones, John Mayer, and Bob Dylan, just to name a few, The Enemies perfectly blends pop and rock for their awesome sound! The music scene in their home country of Ireland is thriving as well and serves as inspiration on the band’s road to success! “There are the big league guys like U2 and The Script who we all admire,” said Ronan, also naming Kodaline as a band to watch out for! “While we look up to these bands we tend to concentrate on our own sound that hopefully sets us apart from the rest,” he added.

Currently, The Enemies are signed to L.A. based agency A&R Worldwide, which is behind the success of artists like Adele, LMFAO, Muse, Coldplay, and more! Working to get global recognition, the band is finishing up their debut album Sounds Big on the Radio, which is sure to be a big success. “Hearing one of our songs, “Perfect Stranger,” on Irish national radio last year, and how big it sounded through FM stereo prompted the album title,” the band said on the inspiration behind the project. “That rush when it we heard it on radio mixed with the realization that potentially thousands of other people are hearing it at the same time in their car or their kitchen or wherever is very exciting. We decided that all the album tracks should have the same impact.”

The album is a combination of tracks that the band has been working on and playing live for the past two years along with new music! Though Colin isn’t currently a full fledged member of the band anymore (he can presently be seen as the bad boy Captain Hook on ABC’s Once Upon a Time!), he has contributed vocals and instruments on the album as well. A contemporary rock pop record, Sounds Big on the Radio will be released sometime next year. “We’re hoping to get a label to put it out, so shopping for potential labels begins soon as the masters are delivered to us,” Ronan said.

In addition to finishing up the album, The Enemies are always composing music for major brands like Chevy and ESPN. In fact, they just finished Playstation 4’s launch music, and have also composed for advertisements for Durex! Their song "Sustain" was featured on Direct TV's 3D surfing documentary series Gone Until December in the U.S. and they've also co-written and recorded the theme tune for the 2012 animated global TV show Max Adventures. They've also recorded the music for major ice-cream brand Cornetto’s new global ad which was inspired by their own song “Dark Light”.In the future, the band hopes to be recording music for years to come, becoming a timeless band that people will love, and touring places around the world! With their talent and ambition, the future is very bright for this group!

You can learn more about The Enemies on their official website, as well as connect with them on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Tumblr. They love to connect with their fans, so definitely hit them up! And be on the lookout for Sounds Big on the Radio when it hits--I’ll be rocking out to it for sure!
