Today, we have South African singer-songwriter Matthew Mole! Matthew grew up in Cape Town, South Africa, and even studied music production in 2010. “I started writing songs and playing shows when I finished school, just for fun really.” The singer said. He moved up to Johannesburg to pursue his music after signing with label Just Music in 2013.

Check out more about Matthew below!

The singer released his alternative folk/electronic album, The Home We Built, on July 29, 2013, an album that his own family inspired. “My family is the main influence behind the whole album,” Matthew explained. “My family has brought me up in a certain way that I tried to bring across in a lot of the songs.” He also credits the South African music scene, calling it like a “big family.” “Everyone is so welcoming to new artists or new ideas,” Matthew said. The album made South African chart history, with Matthew becoming the first domestic artist to enter the top of the iTunes SA chart, outselling the entire Top 10 including JAY Z, Robin Thicke, Imagine Dragons and The Rolling Stones combined!

Matthew is a true artist, who gives listeners a piece of himself with every song that he creates. “I just try to write stuff from my heart,” he acknowledged. “That’s the whole point behind music.” In the future, he hopes to continue to grow as an artist. “I’m hoping to have made a cool name for myself in South Africa, and I hope to continue touring in South Africa,” Matthew said of where he sees himself in the years to come. “I also hope to travel internationally as much as I can over the next few years.”

Rihanna has officially dropped her music video for pop ballad “What Now," the sixth single from her album Unapologetic. Filmed in Thailand and directed by Darren Craig, Jeff Nicholas and Jonathan Craven of The Uprising Creative, the video features a somber and hurting Rihanna singing and dancing erratically as if she were in an insane asylum. Her gothic look is definitely a flashback to her Good Girl Gone Bad days too!

Check out the video below!

Even though it may seem kind of weird, I think it was appropriate for the theme of the song. With this song, Rihanna seems to be going through a standstill, with her love life, friends, and maybe even career. Though surrounded by people, she feels alone still. She seems to be going through the motions, and can't bring herself to express the real emotions within her. This is probably one of my most favorite songs by her not only on Unapologetic, but throughout Rihanna's entire career. The melody and hook get me every time.

A few weeks back, I got an email to check out some clips from a show on TV One called Verses and Flow, engineered by Lexus. I remember vaguely hearing about it and seeing a preview a while ago, but never really sat down and watched. Man, was I missing out! Hosted by actor and poet Omari Hardwick, the show features some of the best spoken word artists in the country, as they discuss real issues from love, self-esteem, current events, racial relations and more! It was very impressive to watch, and now I've made it a part of my Wednesday nights (the show comes on Wednesdays at 9 p.m. ET on TV One...check your local listings!).

I got the opportunity to chat with poet Prentice Powell, who has performed on every season of Verses and Flow, both individually and with his poetry collective Fiveology! To say that he is an amazing and talented poet is a complete understatement, and, for those who have seen and heard his work, you know why. For those who haven't, you'll see what I mean right now!

Check out more about Prentice below!
Hailing from Oakland and Union City, California, Prentice first pursued his career in poetry after an impromptu performance at the Oakland Slam in 2003, where he was signed up without him knowing after he wrote his first poem after a break up. He was called back to speak again for the Slam Team, and wrote new poems every week to compete. He ended up placing 4th in the nation at the National Finals, only two months later! "From there, it was kind of something that I said, "I don't think this happened for no reason," he said. He continued to write, finding a true release in poetry, calling it “extremely therapeutic.” Over the years, he has won several awards with his thought-provoking work, including becoming the 2006 Oakland and S.F. Grand Slam champion, as well as the 2007 Spoken Word Artist of the Year at the Black Music Awards. He was also named the East Bay Express, Best Poet, in 2010.

Prentice stated that his journey in poetry has been inspired by several of his peers, including his own poetry collective, Fiveology. “[Shawn Williams, one of the group’s members] was there the first time I got on stage and did a poem. I was competing against him,” the poet recalled. He also counted poets Amir Sulaimain, Scorpio Blues, and Andrew Tyree as poets that he looks up to. “One thing that Andrew does that I think is really, really dope,” Prentice said, “is that he has this ability to hop out of his poem in the middle of his poem and be completely random, or relevant and just talk to the audience and hop right back into his poem, and never miss a beat. That was one of the first things I purposely started trying to do as an artist.”

As previously stated, Prentice has performed on every season of Verses and Flow, and considers it a great opportunity to be a part of. “I think it’s unlike anything that’s on television,” Prentice stated. “I think we complain about not having enough content, not having enough positive representation, or different representation. The beauty of Verses and Flow is that nothing is the same.” It's very true! Real issues are discussed, and different cultures are represented on the show, and it's great to watch! "Lexus was supportive enough and believed enough in the voices that we have to support it and put it on a national platform, and I think people are being exposed to something new," Prentice added. “The biggest blessing is that every episode I get to sit down with my sons and daughter, and they get to watch their daddy on TV. So many other kids and people can be touched through this show. You kind of can’t help but support something like that.”

One of the very first full clips I saw of the show was one of Prentice's from this season, a powerful performance of his thought-provoking piece, "The System." It reflects "The System" that holds so many, especially the African-American culture, in its hands. One day, Prentice randomly thought that if “the System,” could talk, what would it say? The poet incorporated a monotone voice, as well as robotic dance movement to add to the piece. “I’m a huge dance fanatic. I learned at a really young age with my three best friends that if you can dance, the girls like you,” he joked about coming up with the movement. In fact, he often checks out dance videos to watch different choreography!  Inspired by internationally known production team Yak Films, Prentice decided to use robotic movement to showcase his love of dance. “Right before I went on to film, I went in the bathroom and practiced for like 45 minutes, because I really wanted it to be good. And I just came out and kind of did what I felt like doing.” He wanted to do something different with the piece, even covering his eyes with his hat to show The System as a generic voice, instead of a person. Trust me when I say, he pulled it off! Check out Prentice's performance of "The System" below!

Prentice is also one fifth of poetry collective Fiveology, who have performed on the show several times as well. He, along with members Javon Johnson, Rudy Francisco, Shawn William and Andrew Tyree, has definitely made a mark in the poetry realm and beyond! The group first linked up when they were all out in Vegas within a two month period at a venue in Vegas. Prentice jokingly suggest doing a show together on Twitter, but the men ended up seriously talking about performing together offline. “They came down to my house, and we wrote a couple of poems together," the artist recalled. Their first show was actually a year ago performing first as the “Blackson Five” “That night, specifically in Oakland, was so powerful for all of us. We thought it was going to be just us doing poems but it became so much more than that.” he reflected. “After that, we kind of just continued to stay in contact, drive down to L.A., and practice. Less than a year later, we’re on tour with Jill Scott, [and] performing at the Essence Festival.” He also acknowledged Lexus and Verses and Flow for their support as well. "Lexus and Verses and Flow really provided a spark for us by putting us on the show, because they never really had anyone collectively on the show, and they really supported and pushed us.” the poet added. The group is incredibly talented, and speak with such authority and honesty, that its no surprise that they have been so successful in such a short period of time! Check out one of their performances on Verses and Flow below!

Prentice has been blessed to travel the world performing his poetry, and his craft has allowed him branch off into different directions, including education. He’s done poetry in classrooms for kids, and has also branched out into developing a creative writing curriculum, focusing on African-American youth. He currently works with autistic children with severe behavioral disorders.  Prentice would eventually like to see his career hit Broadway.  "We have a 90 minute show that we're doing right now," Prentice said, which could do very well in NY. "We have a residency at the Ebony Repertory Theatre in L.A. It's called Inner Man/Outer Space [the show touches on their experiences as black men, individually and collectively]. But honestly, wherever God takes me. I can't really imagine what God could have in store for me at this point, and in store for us. But I definitely won't say no!" he laughed.

Prentice is honestly blown away by the success of his and Fiveology's work, which he merely sees as something he does for himself. To be able to travel all over, beyond just poetry slams, coffee houses, and contests, and reach people is an incredible feeling! “I never saw what we just did this summer happening," he admitted. “To be able to touch people the way that I have, we have as a collective, the way Verses and Flow has? There is no glass ceiling to what we do and that’s really what this summer taught me. And if people thought there was, it’s just been shattered."

You can follow and check out more from Prentice on Twitter! You can also check out more from Fiveology on their official website, as well as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter!

Today, the spotlight is on Irish pop/rock band, The Enemies! Founding members Ronan McQuillan (lead vocals/guitar) and actor Colin O’Donoghue (vocals/guitar) started the band back in 2003, adding along members John Boy Berkley (bass), Johnny Crean (guitar), and Dazzy Oglesby (drums) along the way. In 2010, the guys finally buckled down and got serious about their music career, getting in the studio to record together! “You have to have a passion for music to pursue it as a career. Like any career really. Being surrounded by creative and talented people makes it an easy decision. There has to be a belief in what you do to continue through the bad times. And lots of sacrifice,” the band said of their career. That strong passion is definitely clear in their music!

Check out more about The Enemies below!

Inspired by the likes of The Beatles, the Rolling Stones, John Mayer, and Bob Dylan, just to name a few, The Enemies perfectly blends pop and rock for their awesome sound! The music scene in their home country of Ireland is thriving as well and serves as inspiration on the band’s road to success! “There are the big league guys like U2 and The Script who we all admire,” said Ronan, also naming Kodaline as a band to watch out for! “While we look up to these bands we tend to concentrate on our own sound that hopefully sets us apart from the rest,” he added.

Currently, The Enemies are signed to L.A. based agency A&R Worldwide, which is behind the success of artists like Adele, LMFAO, Muse, Coldplay, and more! Working to get global recognition, the band is finishing up their debut album Sounds Big on the Radio, which is sure to be a big success. “Hearing one of our songs, “Perfect Stranger,” on Irish national radio last year, and how big it sounded through FM stereo prompted the album title,” the band said on the inspiration behind the project. “That rush when it we heard it on radio mixed with the realization that potentially thousands of other people are hearing it at the same time in their car or their kitchen or wherever is very exciting. We decided that all the album tracks should have the same impact.”

The album is a combination of tracks that the band has been working on and playing live for the past two years along with new music! Though Colin isn’t currently a full fledged member of the band anymore (he can presently be seen as the bad boy Captain Hook on ABC’s Once Upon a Time!), he has contributed vocals and instruments on the album as well. A contemporary rock pop record, Sounds Big on the Radio will be released sometime next year. “We’re hoping to get a label to put it out, so shopping for potential labels begins soon as the masters are delivered to us,” Ronan said.

In addition to finishing up the album, The Enemies are always composing music for major brands like Chevy and ESPN. In fact, they just finished Playstation 4’s launch music, and have also composed for advertisements for Durex! Their song "Sustain" was featured on Direct TV's 3D surfing documentary series Gone Until December in the U.S. and they've also co-written and recorded the theme tune for the 2012 animated global TV show Max Adventures. They've also recorded the music for major ice-cream brand Cornetto’s new global ad which was inspired by their own song “Dark Light”.In the future, the band hopes to be recording music for years to come, becoming a timeless band that people will love, and touring places around the world! With their talent and ambition, the future is very bright for this group!

You can learn more about The Enemies on their official website, as well as connect with them on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Tumblr. They love to connect with their fans, so definitely hit them up! And be on the lookout for Sounds Big on the Radio when it hits--I’ll be rocking out to it for sure!
Just hours ago, Ariana Grande premiered her official video for her newest single "Right There," featuring Big Sean! The visual, The video has a Romeo and Juliet, masquerade ball type of theme! Arnold Schwarzenegger's 20-year-old son Patrick Schwarzenegger plays her Romeo, and Big Sean plays the role of The Priest. As Ariana gets dolled up and walks the ball with her friends, she finds her true love! Check it out below!

It's a very cute video...I just wasn't feeling her flicking that fan all over the place! But it was cute. I still hope that, for her next album, Ariana turns away from the Nick vibe a little bit. She's definitely a girly girl, and I'm sure we'll always get that from her, but with her talent, I want her to give a little more with visuals and performance. I love this song though!

Today, the spotlight is on British electro-folk singer Samuel Gough! Born to an artistic family in London (his father was a writer, and his mother and grandfather were actors), music was introduced in his childhood relatively early, mostly classical. At seven years old, he began singing in a “very strict, terrifying school choir,” but at 14 he branched out and put a band together with friends called STUBBLE, as his boarding school. He was in boarding school at the time, but got permission to hit the local country pubs on Saturday night to play covers of old Cream, B.B. King and Allman Brothers songs. He ended up starting another band at 16 with his sister and cousins once based in Spain, on the island of Mallorca, playing the local summer fiestas!

Read more about Samuel below!

Yet what Samuel calls the “lighting bolt” moment of knowing he wanted to pursue music was at the age of 17, as he was on a train to London to start training in opera. While reading an old Allman Brothers article in Rolling Stone, and the imagery of Duane Allman pulling out his motorcycle from the tour bus and taking off on the open road inspired Samuel. “Something just lit me up,” he said. Inspired by artists like Simon and Garfunkel, Queen, Mozart, as well as Ry Cooder, Paco de Lucia, and, of course, the Allman Brothers, Samuel has a pretty eclectic taste in music. The London music scene also sparked his creativity. “My sister ran a little kind of “speakeasy” in town, The Asylum, filled every night with all the local musicians who’d come down and let off steam after a show,” he said. Close by, were blues and country music clubs, all of which had great musicians that just played from the heart. Samuel was even inspired from visiting different flamenco bars. “I guess this gave me a sense of no limits in my music,” he said of the various styles he heard, “not following any one style, and sticking it in a box.”

Samuel recently released his LP Day Broken on September 30, 2013. The singer worked with producers Sleep Deez and Aidan Clarke, which he calls a “humbling experience.” “[They are] two guys who give so effortlessly--passion, creativity, understanding, and, above all, no bulls**t,” he said. When asked what his favorite tracks are from the EP, Samuel chose lead single “Morning Light,” and the title track “Day Broken, “both for how easily they were written. Both [were] created at day break.” Samuel added, “Words and music flew out as if they'd always been there. They lift me up, these tracks.”

Currently, the singer is in Paris, working on an electro-folk project for French TV with French jazz composer and maestro horn player Gnowee. He’s also writing new songs and arranging old tracks for a re-release of Day Broken. This artist is truly fearless, and doesn’t want to put any limits on his music and creativity! “Coming from a classical background, being deeply influenced by Flamenco and also albums like A Meeting By The River [by Ry Cooder and Vishwa Mohan Bhatt], I feel things cinematically, and every visual has a different soundtrack to it,” he said. “As the long as the music is TRUE, there is nothing that cannot be done.” In the future, Samuel would love to branch away from the norm for his career. He wants to play around the world, but in unexpected expected places. “Ancient ruins, Greek temples, out in the desert,” the creative artists is thinking, “using local sounds and players to color my brand of cinematic country-folk, in so giving the music new life at every turn.”

You can check out more about Samuel on his official website. He is truly a talented artist with a unique voice, beautiful lyrics, and amazing sound! Definitely an artist that you want to check out for those who love electro and folk, and even those who want to branch away from their typical genres!
