Happy Friday y'all! We have another great spotlight today! As always, if you are or represent an upcoming artist, designer, producer, etc., and are interested in a feature on the blog, visit our Features/Submissions page for more information!

Today, we have designer Carla Stovall! Raised in Dallas, Texas, Carla began developing a love for fashion as a kid, even drawing out her own designs. She received her degree in Fashion Design and Merchandising at Wade College in her hometown, where she learned how to sew and improved upon her designing and illustration skills. The designer acknowledged she has always paid close attention to styles people wear in Dallas, both the good and the bad. "To this day, when I see certain people, I [think] 'If they just would've done this, that would not look like that on them," Carla said honestly. "Half the time, I notice that people wear things that don't appear like it matches their shape." Those thoughts inspired Carla to begin creating custom pieces for others who are not the ideal "square" or "hourglass" shape.

The designer stated that she is inspired by Venny Etienne, designer of LeVinity, who actually attended Wade College as well, and spent time talking with Carla about fashion. "He inspires me because he started like I did," she said. "He just had a different way of doing it, and different vision [for his designs]." She also loves paying attention to the small details or items she sees in daily life that the typical person may not even be phased by. Those minor details often inspire her own custom designs. Carla's mom, who passed away a few years ago, also serves a big inspiration and motivates the designer to keep doing what she loves. "My biggest drive is thinking about how proud my mom would be of me," she said. "I push myself to keep going so I can make her proud."

Though she admitted that she only focused on designing off and on at first, Carla began pushing herself to hone her craft. During her time at Wade, she had a professor that would always compliment her work and encouraged her, even when she didn’t realize her potential herself. One of Carla’s dresses was actually showcased for the college’s 50th anniversary, which allowed her to connect with other designers and staff. “At that time, I started thinking ‘Well dang, if everybody thinks that I do good work, maybe I really need to get into it,” the designer said. Carla eventually started her boutique, Couture Station, which offers a variety of clothing for different body shapes for women. “It’s more of complimenting the best parts of you,” she said of the line. She also stated that she focuses on making sure her designs are distinctive from the pack. “One thing about Couture Station is that I try to not to do things that you can find in stores,” Carla stated. “There’s going to be something that makes it stand out from all the rest.” Her mission is to make ladies feel super confident and fly while rocking her clothes!

In addition to continuing to build her brand, Carla is working on  a fashion show with her sister set for November, opening it up to other upcoming designers for a chance to showcase their work as well. What sets this designer apart is that she refuses to limit herself to trends, always thinking outside the box when it comes to her clothing. Though Carla still balances a full time job with designing, she has a dream of expanding her brand across the country. The designer has a concept of a store that provides clothing, accessories, footwear, beauty products, and more, and offers quick turnaround for custom pieces, but still gives a peaceful vibe for customers (she calls it “Lowes meets Starbucks!”). The vision would provide customers to get everything they need for a complete look right in her store. Definitely a great idea!

You can connect with Carla and learn more about Couture Station on Facebook and Instagram

Lil B – Bay Area rapper, Based God and Bernie Sanders supporter – made plenty of waves during the NBA Playoffs when he cursed LeBron James and J.R. Smith for their hubris, and though he'd subsequently lift the bad juju on LBJ, apparently the rest of the league was paying attention.

Or at least the D-League was. This week, the Delaware 87ers, the Philadelphia 76ers' developmental squad, extended a tryout invitation to B. All he has to do is show up at the New Castle Police Athletic League facility on September 19, where he'll compete alongside other hoops hopefuls for a spot on the team.

On Friday, August 21, 2015, Just Mike (the poet) hosted the Washington, D.C. stop of The Love and Poetry Tour featuring Vision, Jamarr Hall, and other poets!

I really wasn't going to even write a post about the event, simply because I just wanted to just soak everything in and truly enjoy myself. I keep telling myself I need to actually enjoy more of life's moments, instead of wanting to capture them all for the blog or social media. However, the more clips I recorded on my phone (I couldn't help it!), the more I wanted to share with you guys!

I'm big on poetry, and big on using writing as self-expression in general. I watch spoken word a lot on YouTube and follow some amazing poets and writers online, Mike included. I've purchased a few of his books a while back, and HAD to see him in person on this tour! I'm glad I did. I was surrounded by amazing people with great vibes, all enjoying great words and music. I'll definitely be supporting the other poets, as well as checking out other open mic and poetry events.

Check out some video below!

Today we have the multi-talented artist and musician Timothy J. Wilson! This star on the rise grew up in White Plains, NY, about 20 minutes from Manhattan. A pastor’s kid, Timothy started playing instruments as a child at church. “As a pastor’s child, you’re pretty much there all the time, [so] they’re putting you on instruments” the singer joked. In addition to the singing chops he inherited from his father and grandmother, Timothy began playing the drums, and then learned other instruments including the piano, guitar, and bass. His talent was being developed extensively as a kid for his journey as an artist. Even at a young age, Timothy knew that music would be his life’s path!

When he graduated high school, Timothy began performing at different open mic events and showcases around NYC, growing in his craft and letting his talent shine. In March 2011, he made the decision to move down to Atlanta after staying in Upstate New York for a while for his music career. “Atlanta has a great reputation for being a launching pad for so many artists,” he stated. Timothy acknowledged that the move has helped his career greatly, not only in terms of music, but also in TV and film! “You have some people moving from Los Angeles, coming to Atlanta, just because it’s so much production going on here,” he said. Not only has the singer performed at multiple cafes, colleges, and festivals, but he’s also been featured in BET’s Let’s Stay Together, branching out into some acting as well.

Inspired by top artists like Stevie Wonder, Prince, Michael Jackson, Jodeci, and Fred Hammond, Timothy really puts his musical talents to work, and has created truly great work! After dropping two EPs previously (Kiss Me and Born to Love), the artist released his third project, LOVESONGWRITER, in May 2015. “I felt that in R&B, I wasn’t hearing [love] as much,” Timothy said, acknowledging how different artists and groups in the past constantly sang of love but that times have changed. “In my mind, I [wanted] to do an EP that [had] the theme of love in every song.” As a songwriter, musician, producer, and singer, he literally created and produced the project by himself! “It’s like an artist that paints or draws, you know? You give them the canvas, and they get in there with those paints,” Timothy said of his creative process. “Give them some time, and what they’re gonna come out with is something that’s solely from them. Whatever you see on it is something that came from their heart.” Though he states that all of the songs on the project are like his “babies,” Timothy has a special place in his heart for the funk-infused track “Away,” which is definitely one of my favorites too. Timothy is using the gifts God gave him, and came out with an awesome project with this EP!

In addition to his music, Timothy has landed a role as Verdine White, legendary bassist of Earth, Wind & Fire in the upcoming Warner Brothers film, The Nice Guys, which stars Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling (set to be released on May 20, 2016). “The role was so up my alley, because he was already one of my influences,” Timothy said. “We have the same skin complexion, [and] pretty much the same build, so all they had to do was put an afro on me, [and] some chops on my face!” He also has been cast in another musical role for the upcoming sitcom, Brothers In Atlanta, starring Maya Rudolph, Jaden Smith, and Bashir Salahuddin. “I’m actually playing in [Maya’s] band in the show,” Timothy said. The cast and crew have shot the pilot, which has picked up by HBO, and are currently waiting on the go ahead to resume filming. So many exciting opportunities and doors being opened for this multi-talented artist! “That’s several things that God has opened up just being here in Atlanta,” Timothy admitted. “I tell you one thing, it’s like being a musician actually helps open up roles even in television and movies.” Acting is definitely something that Timothy sees himself doing even more of in the future, being the total package as an entertainer.

With ALL of this going on, Timothy is already writing and recording new music, and continuing work with his own label, Tim’elody Records. He even launched a 100-day business challenge (from July 5th to October 12th ) for other entrepreneurs, challenging them to post something about their businesses for 100 days straight somewhere on a social media platform. “Sometimes when people have businesses, [they] slack on the promotion,” Timothy said. The challenge is to help build consistency and growth in other businesses, which is very commendable. In terms of what sets him apart, Timothy believes part of his uniqueness lies in being a multi-instrumentalist in this industry. “I definitely use that in promotion, because, when you’re out here, you’ve got to use whatever to your advantage as far as marketing,” he stated. In the future, the artist would like to continue to take his career to the next level, including writing and producing for other artists, performing at different awards shows and snagging leading roles in movies. “Just being successful as a man, and as an African-American male, continuing to be an example, making great music by the help of God,” Timothy said. “The promotion comes from God, [but] we have to put in the work, though. That’s what I believe is going to happen as I continue to keep doing what I’m doing.”

Today, we have rock/pop group Young-Borra! The group, comprised of Jonas Young-Borra (lead vocalist/lyricist), Garrett DeTemple (vocals/bass/lyricist), and  Michael Curley (production), definitely has a unique sound that resonates with listeners. Jonas first met and began playing music with Garrett during their time at Purchase College in New York.

Jonas, the group’s founder, was raised in the Bronx by his mother, who was a former Broadway actress/singer, and his father, a jazz saxophonist who studied with Jimmy Lyrons. “All I heard until age 10 was pre-1970's jazz, classical and Broadway music,” the singer admitted. “I didn't discover anything beyond that until my dad's guitar player left some cassette tapes at the house with music from the 60's, 70's and 80's. He soon fell in love with artists like Van Halen, Fine Young Cannibals, David Bowie, The Village People, the Rolling Stones, and The Beatles. Though Jonas admits that each of the band members have their own unique interests, they all “weren't so much into what was the "norm" that other kids were listening to,” he said. “Together, our New York, fast-talking, fast-walking lifestyles certainly have affected our sound.”

Young-Borra’s latest track, “Surround Sound,” is an example of the group’s standout sound. Inspired by the band VHS or Beta, Jonas began working on the track on GarageBand a long time ago, but didn’t began working on it again until adding Michael on as producer. “Mike took the original ideas I had and melded it into something new,” Jonas said. “Garrett and I worked on lyrics until, after changing the melody several times, we finally got something that we liked.” The band recently released a music video for the song, which was mixed and mastered by the head of production at Purchase and Michael’s former professor, Peter Denenberg (Spin Doctor's "Two Princes" producer). The video itself was directed and edited by Erik Christopher Lopez. Check out the video below!

In the future, the group wants to travel the world, playing the biggest stages for audiences. “Young-Borra is a lifelong project now!” Jonas said. “Our goal is to be playing and writing music full time. This is all I want, all we want. It's exciting.” Jonas himself wants the band to “exist with relevance,” not just being the next best thing coming out for the moment, and then the fire fades out. The group is definitely talented, passionate and fired up, so be on the lookout for more from them in the future!

You can check out more from the band on their official website, SoundCloud, and YouTube. You can also connect with them on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram!

Zendaya is officially set to judge the 2016 Miss America pageant!

According to PEOPLE, the star will join singer Brett Eldredge, snowboarding bronze medalist Amy Purdy and Taya Kyle, author and wife of the late U.S. Navy Seal Chris Kyle, on the judging panel for the competition.

Zendaya said in a statement:
"It's great to be part of a show that celebrates women who are in college or graduated, and striving to make the world a better place through their chosen platform, ranging from domestic violence and bullying to cancer research and female empowerment, while also embracing beauty and fashion."
The 95th annual Miss America pageant will take place on September 13, 2015.

I'm not the biggest fan of the pageant, but I do really like and have respect for Zendaya! This is a great opportunity for her, especially being as young as she is. Congrats to her for snagging this gig!

Kidd Flash is actually the son of singer Ginuwine, and has inherited his father's love and passion for music, although he leans toward the hip hop side. The young rapper definitely has potential to make a name for himself in the industry.

Check out the latest track from singer/songwriter Madeline, entitled, "The Mad Ones!"

Originally released on July 18, 2015, the unique track serves as inspiration to the innovative dreamers out there that may be seen as weird or insane simply because of their thought process or work. Madeline admits that she is a "mad one" herself, but doesn't particularly care what anyone may think of her. "I'm a rarity, straight mastermind...I find clarity in me, myself, and I," Madeline sings on the track. "They swore I was crazy, but they're just scared. I've earned my degree in not afraid to fail, cuz I'm not afraid to fail."

Today, we have poetry/songwriting duo XpressionsEnt! Nicole and Rae have both been writing for years, but, in the past few years have been steadily pursuing their dreams of writing and working together as a group.

Raised a self proclaimed “army brat,” Nicole discovered her love for words at an early age. After buying her first CD, Tim McGraw’s Not a Moment Too Soon, at the age of 8, she was truly captivated by the way the music made her feel. “I knew I wanted to make people [feel] that way at a very early age,” she said. Nicole began writing when she was about 12 years old, just occasional short poems that were a way to express herself. “I just knew that it was a way to release the things I was afraid to speak,” she admitted. Nicole admitted that settling down with her family in the city of Nashville had a great impact on her and her writing. “There is something about the Nashville grind and beauty that makes you want to get out and learn more, experience more, and grow more,” the writer said. She has also more recently been inspired by poet and novelist Charles Bukowski.

Rae herself has been writing for the last 14 years or so. “I knew early on that I had a gift when it came to writing,” she said. Originally from Los Angeles, the writer believes that the city had a huge impact on her. “The hustle, the will that’s required to survive [there] just helped shaped me and make me that more diverse of a writer,” Rae said. She acknowledged having her share of highs and lows in life, including being diagnosed with diabetes at 16. “No one has a perfect life,” Rae stated. “Adversity makes your life more relatable. Our words [have] real, raw emotion.” She began taking her craft more seriously about three years ago. “Life changed directions and it forced me to look at things differently,” Rae disclosed. “Once I did, my choice was clear. I have to write.” Rae is admitted obsessed with the talented writers and spoken word artists from creative arts company The Strivers Row, especially Alysia Harris, as well as the late, great Maya Angelou.

Nicole and Rae previously connected through mutual friends in high school, and quickly realized their shared love and passion for writing, poetry, and music. “Til this day, I remember us writing poems for each other whenever our crushes were acting crazy,” Rae laughed. “We became writing partners before we knew exactly where this journey would take us because we simply trusted each other’s ambition and talent,” Nicole added. Thus, XpressionsEnt was born!

XpressionsEnt regularly posts unique poems and quotes on Instagram, Facebook, and Tumblr. “We really try to make sure that we are offering readers something different,” Rae said. “Whether it's in our approach or format, we try to give them more than the norm because that can get boring.” Nicole added, “We take risks with our writing to see how our audience reacts. We put our hearts on the line every time so that other people can relate.”

Currently, the duo is working on a body of work showcasing their songwriting skills, as well as a few books set to be released next year. Nicole and Rae hope to expand more into music and songwriting in the future, but don’t rule out other writing opportunities. “We are definitely trying to branch off into a little of everything,” Nicole said. “Once we get our foot in the door, nothing is going to be off limits.” Rae agreed, stating that she sees XpressionsEnt being a force to be reckoned with everywhere. “Words are so powerful. They can heal,” she said. “As long as I’m able, I want us to provide that for others in any way that we can.” Be on the lookout for this dedicated group in the future!

You can check out more from XpressionsEnt on InstagramFacebook, Tumblr and YouTube!

I was honored to be able to cover Kollaboration DC's 6th Annual Showcase & Competition this past weekend!

Kollaboration DC is one of many chapters of the non-profit organization Kollaboration, which seeks to empower Asian Americans pursuing artistic paths. A fellow Loyola alum, Shanika Jayakody, serves as Associate Director of the organization and invited me to come out to check out the showcase. I love music of all genres, so I really enjoyed myself!

Held at the F. Scott Fitzgerald Theatre in Rockville, MD on Saturday, August 8, the showcase featured upcoming artists from the DMV competing for a chance to advance to the Kollaboration STAR event in Los Angeles. The event was hosted by Adriel Luis, with guest performances from him, Sam Ock, and last year's competition winner Paradise. After scouting and audition artists in the area, it came down to six finalists: pianist Nan, music duo Santa Jaca, singer/pianist Abby Rose, singer/songwriter Alicia Rae, singer Audrey,  and singing duo 2Parkz. The winner, announced that same night, will compete in LA against champions from other chapters across the country for a $10,000 grand prize! With this group of great talent, the judges, Tim Ma, Joe Kim, and Tanner Chung, definitely had a hard decision to make in determining this year's winner!

Check out a video recap of the competition below!

I had a great time at the show! There were definitely a lot of talented artists there, all passionate about music and performing. I also love Kollaboration's mission to truly assist Asian-Americans with their artistic pursuits, helping to build up their craft and confidence. Plus, if we're honest, the entertainment industry as a whole could definitely use more diversity!

Congratulations to this year's winner Audrey, as well as to all of the finalists for making it this far and sharing their talent on stage!

You can view the entire interviews with each of the finalists as well as Sam Ock and Paradise, as well as full performances from the showcase on YouTube. Be sure to follow Kollaboration DC as well on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Instagram

Keeping the spotlights coming! As always, if you are or represent an upcoming artist, designer, producer, etc., and would like to be featured on The Spotlight, please visit our Features/Submissions page for more information!

Today, we have designer Renata Eileena, owner of custom line Reneta Eileena, LLC. Raised in Philadelphia, Renata has always had a love of fashion. Though she noted that Philly has its own unique style, the designer admitted her own style is outside of that, finding inspiration from “literally everywhere,” pulling from art, TV shows, etc. “When you’re an artist, you can get inspired from literally looking out the window,” Renata said. She is also inspired by Christian Louboutin, Yves St Laurent, and Betsey Johnson.

The designer eventually went to school for fashion, though she found out that wasn’t something she actually wanted to study. Instead, she experimented with sewing and creating her own clothing line. “I kind of realized that sewing wasn’t for me,” Renata chuckled. “I realized that I really, really love shoes, and I was always seeing people with the same [shoes].” The designer decided to start creating her own custom footwear as a hobby, and, thus, Renatta Eileena, LLC was born!

Renata started creating her custom shoes back in 2010, though it wasn’t an official business until last year. During that time, she was also working at a temp agency, when she was fired out of the blue. After that unexpected hit, the designer decided to try her hand at making more shoes to supplement her income. After gaining another job, she was, unfortunately, let go again last year. “[After that], I just said ‘You know what, I’m not going back to work. I’m going to make sure I design footwear and I take this seriously,” Renata stated. Everything happens for a reason!

Currently, Renata Eileena, LLC offers a variety of custom heels and sneakers, as well as a few bustiers. Renata definitely hopes to expand the brand in the future to including more clothing and beauty products. "I want a clothing line, I want a lipstick line. I want an eyelash line. I want everything!" she said excitedly. "I want to take over the world of fashion, man." Though she wants to go into major production, the designer will strive to keep the authenticity and uniqueness of her brand intact. "My number one thing that I don't want to do is blend in," Renata said firmly.

In addition to working on expanding her line, Renata is also hosting her first conference for entrepreneurs entitled, "The Entrepreneur Revolution Shall Be Televised," this fall! She was inspired to hold this conference by her own ups and downs as a business owner, as well as her side business as a financial planner, consulting with other budding entrepreneurs. A common denominator in many of her clients is that they lack the support and confidence they need to truly succeed. "I really want to pour into people. I want to help build people's mindsets," Renata said of the conference, which will be held on September 19, 2015 at the Urban Art Gallery in Philadelphia. The day-long event will have workshops on finance, branding, mentorship, etc., and will allow upcoming business owners to network with each other as well. "I need people to understand that you can live your dream. I feel like a lot of people are settling," Renata said, stressing that entrepreneurs have to have vision and clear-cut goals to get to that end dream! "Once you have your eye on something, you have to be relentless, fearless, [and have] so much determination," she stated. (Sidebar: we had a great conversation about dreams and goals, and she ended up pouring a lot into me on a day I really needed it!). Renata plans to eventually hold these conferences all over the country, and even branching off into schools.

Renata believes that her creativity and uniqueness is what sets her apart from other designers. "I was born to create," Renata said. "I eat, sleep, breathe creativity. I'm not trying to be like anybody else." In the future, she would like to hold more conferences, as well as hold a specific conference regarding fashion and finance. She also wants to go into production of a fashion show specifically for custom designers, whose incredible, unique styles don't typically make it to Fashion Week or other typical fashion shows. "I really see Renata Eileena as an international brand!" the designer said. I'm telling you, Renata is DEFINITELY someone to look out for! She has the necessary drive, passion, and vision it takes to succeed in any venture, and I look forward to seeing what's ahead for her!

The ballerina, who happens to be the first African American ballet dancer to take the lead role in Swan Lake, looks absolutely stunning as she poses on pointe! In addition to that great achievement, Essence also notes that Misty also has a new role on Broadway in the play On The Town, has signed a contract with Under Amour, and is now engaged to her long time boyfriend.

With so many accomplishments at only 32 years old, Misty is having an amazing year. I would say that she deserves it with all the hard work and training she has put in to reach her goals. Goals do not happen without a plan and hard work. Misty gets added to the list of people that young African American girls should look up to or admire.

Make sure you grab your copy ladies and gentlemen!!!

Some months ago, we had the opportunity to have rapper Mosliano as a featured artist on The Spotlight. Now, he has released his latest visual for track "Paris in July," which was actually shot in Paris some time ago. We see amazing, beautiful shots of the city as Mosliano raps about growing in his craft and continuing to progress.

After nine seasons of The Game (5 of which I recapped for this blog), I can't believe that last night was the final episode! Picking up from last week, turns out when Pookie's gun went off, Rick Fox was accidentally shot in the leg. Like any sane person, he wants to call 911. However, Tasha tries to change his mind, because Pookie has two strikes on him already. He doesn't want to go to jail and Tasha is freaking out since that's Kai's father (and because she still loves him). Chardonnay comes over and sees Rick shot, and plans to take everybody to the hospital. As Chardonnay drives, Tasha and Rick talk about their relationship (with Pookie sitting right on the other side of Tasha, mind you). Though Rick has some lingering feelings, the truth is Tasha's heart isn't with Rick anymore. Rick calmly accepts it, and decides to say that he accidentally shot himself versus blaming Pookie. He kicks them out of the car, just so that Pookie doesn't get in trouble, knowing how much it means to Tasha.

Tasha and Pookie start their walk back, and she apologizes for trying to run off with Kai as well as cheating on him with Rick. Pookie accepts her apology, admitting that he was afraid Rick was trying to steal his family. He's not over everything she did to him, but he's also not over her! Pookie wants them to try to be a family, which Tasha happily accepts!

The next day, we see some familiar faces! Ding Dong (Derwin) and Med School (Melanie)! Derwin helps Melanie out of the car, and it turns out she is PREGNANT!!! Because they've had trouble conceiving, Melanie is deathly afraid that something will go wrong. However, Derwin tries to tell her that everything will be okay. They're close to San Diego, so he also suggests going down to see everyone. Melanie is unsure, since she's scared to announce the pregnancy. At that point, Derwin surprises her with a band playing stating that he will help her get across the goal line with the baby!

Later, Blue and Keira meet in his new condo. Blue believes Keira helped him realize the world out there waiting for him. They seem to come to a mutual understanding and have a better respect for each other now. Meanwhile, at the fertility clinic, Melanie and Derwin reveal that they're actually having twins! Derwin sees a familiar looking girl, and it turns out it's "Eggs," the turkey baster girl who tried to trap Derwin back in the day!!! Melanie walks over to her, and actually thanks her for being a turkey-basting groupie. From that, Melanie learned to go after what she wanted unapologetically, and that's how she got Derwin back. Turns out that Eggs is a professional surrogate apparently now, making mad money to carry people's babies! Melanie salutes her hustle, though.

At the game that determines whether the Sabers are making the playoffs, a lot of the players are still feeling sick! Jason tells them that they all need to think positively regardless of how they feel, and get it together! Jason knows he needs to win this game in order to help snag the coaching position.

Back at the doctor's, Melanie and Derwin find out that it's a 50/50 chance that the smaller twin Melanie is carrying will make it. The doctor asks Melanie if she wants to carry one or both of these babies to term. At that point, Melanie feels like God truly hates her. Derwin tries to be philosophical and tells her to walk on faith. At the end of the day, he's right though. Against all odds, they made it in their professional lives and their relationship because of the love and faith they have in each other. They will be there for each other regardless, because there's nothing the two of them can't handle.

During the game, Derwin and Melanie find out that Tasha isn't there, which freaks Melanie out because she wants to share her good news. A driver keeps driving them around trying to find people they know. When they don't find anyone, Melanie sees that their lives aren't in San Diego anymore, but with the babies. They have to let their friends do them, and then go live their own lives. On the way out, though, they run into Tasha! They announce that they're pregnant. At that moment, Kelly comes in, and it's a mini Sunbeam reunion! Kelly even does a little Sunbeam blessing over the babies. Tasha reveals, though, that many of the the Sabers have food poisoning, and with the at risk-babies, Melanie should probably leave. She and Derwin then ride off into the light together, partly ending the classic Game era.

On the field, Blue and Jason try to come up with a game plan to make a major move on the field. Blue hesitantly suggests that Malik may be the only option. The Sabers end up winnng the game after Malik hit the field. He announces the plan to have a press conference later to make a big announcement as well. Afterwards, Kelly and Jason talk to Herbie, and it turns out that Coach Sparks came to see the game! Herbie states he's not sure if Sparks will be back as head coach, but there are other factors to consider that can sway his attention (aka the offer for Herbie to watch Kelly and Jason have sex!).

Later, Malik stages a casting call for Keira, admitting that he needed to clear his head to focus on the game, but now he wants to retire and walk off that field with her.  He wants to fund an entire movie for her! However, you can't just play with other people's emotions the way he did. Still unimpressed, Keira states she slept with Blue last night, but Malik wants to still work it out. He PROPOSES to her, but Keira is over it and walks away. Later, at the press conference, apparently the media already knows about him retiring anyway, so it's not big news. However, Malik is waiting on Keira to come out, but she refuses, wanting to work on loving herself first. Instead of announcing a retirement, Malik decides to announce that he's sticking with football for the long run. It was a disappointing ending with them, but hopefully Keira does find something for herself.

Later that night, Jason and Kelly have sex in front of Herbie for the coaching position, even calling him "Grandma." Ew. However, a month later, Jason is head coach and the Sabers win the championship with Malik at the helm! Four months later, Melanie gave birth to both twins, a girl and boy, with DJ, Derwin's son with Janay, by their side to meet his new siblings. Six months later, Keira snags lead in Transformers V. Though it's rumored that she's with Michael B. Jordan, she's not. Looks like she finally found something better for herself outside of a relationship. Blue gets flowers from agent (and Tasha's former rival) Irv Smith personally, who has signed him. The next day, Tasha and Pookie move into a beautiful house with Kai, sticking to their commitment to be a family.

I wasn't that ecstatic over how everything ended, but it did give closure to the series nicely. It's a little sad to believe that this show is over now! Don't get me wrong, to an extent, I felt like it was time for BET and us fans to let it go. However, after all the history and years with this show, with it first being on The CW for three years and coming back on BET after a good couple of years, it's bittersweet. No more recaps...now I have to find other shows to recap (I'm eyeing a few new ones for the fall season!).

What did you think of #TheFinalGame?

I was able to go check out an advanced screening of Ricki and the Flash this week, which stars Meryl Streep as the title character. I just had to see Meryl rocking out in a band for myself!

Read a brief synopsis of the film below:

"It's been a roller-coaster ride for Ricki Rendazzo (Meryl), a one-time wife and mother of three who left her family behind to follow her dreams of rock 'n' roll stardom. Now, the singer and guitarist must face the music when she returns home to Indiana to reconnect with ex-husband Pete (Kevin Kline), troubled daughter Julie (Mamie Gummer) and engaged son Josh (Sebastian Stan). Filled with regret, Ricki hopes to find redemption for all of the bad choices that she made in the past."

Check out more of my review below!

Note: Some spoilers may be ahead.

When daughter Julie becomes depressed after her husband leaves her, Ricki flies out to see her at her ex's house. At first, it's rocky with everyone under one roof, since Ricki left the family to do her music. However, Ricki's fun-loving, down-to earth attitude begins to win Julie and Pete over again. In some regards, we see that Ricki is kind of what the family is missing, and that Julie and Ricki are actually a lot alike. As Ricki begins warming up to them, though, she begins to really feel a part of the family, and has some unrealistic expectations of just being able to step back into her kids' lives. However, when she meets up with her sons Josh and Adam (Nick Westrate) and Josh's fiancee Emily (Hailey Gates), it's clear that that's going to take a while for them to warm up to her again.

Another interesting dynamic is between Ricki and Pete's wife Maureen (Audra McDonald), who has stepped in for Ricki as the children's mother for the past 20 years. Of course, Ricki feels like she can come back in like nothing's changed, but Maureen disagrees and would like her to go back home. After all, it was Maureen that was there for all of the big moments in the children's lives. There's a lot of tension between these two mothers, which sparked my interest when the movie started to lull a bit.

In the end, the family all comes to a happy conclusion as Meryl plays with her band, The Flash, at Josh's wedding. They realize that, as dysfunctional as they may be, they're all still family, which I expected. I found myself getting caught up in the emotional moments a little bit, I can't lie.

Meryl herself is a legendary actress. There is no denying this. With every character I've seen her play over the years, even with her acting as Ricki, I never see Meryl. I see the character. She's played a variety of different characters over the course of her career, and that's because her talent is impeccable. She truly becomes the character, beyond just the hair, makeup, and costuming. It's the taking on of different accents, different body movements, different tones, etc, that separates Meryl from a lot of other actresses. Meryl, seemingly effortlessly, gave a great rock 'n' roll character in Ricki.

Though I love Meryl, the film itself is definitely pretty predictable. It's a story of a regretful mom tries to reconnect with her kids, and manages to in some way (this time through some good old rock 'n' roll). Nothing wrong with that, but it's just predictable from the jump. And I know it's a movie, but let's be real. Twenty years of abandonment issues can't just be swept under the rug with a few cover songs. I would have loved to see more real conversation about Ricki uprooting to LA, and what her family really went through because of it. I also would have love to see more interaction and conversation between Ricki and her two sons, Josh and Adam. She mainly bonded with Julie and Pete until the wedding. However, this is a comedic drama, so you can't really expect all that I guess.

Overall, it's a cute movie, though kind of sappy, with funny moments and pretty good music (Meryl has a decent voice!). I can't say I absolutely loved it or would buy it, but I did enjoy watching for a night.

RATING: ★ 1/2 (three and 1/2 out of five stars)

I'm not the one to take things like this serious but I watched The Muppets when I was little. For years, I was trying to figure out if these two were really together. Well, it's clear that Miss Piggy and Kermit The Frog were together and they have decided to split! When you see two muppets split, it makes you question love a bit!

According to E! News, Miss Piggy made a "statement" announcing the breakup.
"After careful thought, thoughtful consideration and considerable squabbling, Kermit the Frog and moi have made the difficult decision to terminate our romantic relationship. We will continue to work together on television (The Muppets/Tuesdays 8 p.m, this fall on ABC) and in all media now known or hereafter devised, in perpetuity, throughout the universe. However, our personal lives are now distinct and separate, and we will be seeing other people, pigs, frogs, et al.," she "wrote" on Facebook. "This is our only comment on this private matter...unless we get the right offer. Thank you for your understanding."
They worked together and were a couple for four decades. I personally am hoping that they reconcile because this is a love that shouldn't die. Miss Piggy and Mr. Kermit, I hope that you two can look beyond your differences.

The View's Rosie Perez and Kelly Osbourne got into a minor heated debate because of a comment Kelly made about Latinos. "If you kick every Latino out of the country, who is going to be cleaning your toilet Donald Trump?" E! News reports. Though Rosie did defend herself, it was clear that Kelly was making a point regarding the malicious things Donald has said about Latinos and immigration.

E! News also reported that that she later apologized stating, "I whole-heartedly f-cked up today. I don't want to bullsh-t anyone with lame excuses. Although I was stopped mid-sentence by Rosie Perez and couldn't finish my point, I will not let Rosie take responsibility for my words. I should have known better as it was on The View and it was live".

Kelly meant well but you always have to think twice before you speak. She stood up as a woman should and was brave enough to apologize for her mistake which really matters.

That's So Raven's cast Raven Symone, Kyle Massey, Orlando Brown and Anneliese van dePorl were spotted downtown in NYC. E News says that Raven Symone posted this picture to the left stating, "Wait till I tell why we were all together."

There aren't enough details on whether or not the Disney cast will be making a acomeback but could it be? I remember getting up on sunny Saturday mornings to watch That's So Raven. I still know every word to the theme song!

I hope this a start of new beginning with them being reunited.  Look out for more information on their upcoming project together.

R&B trio Thr3ee has released their latest track, "Fragile," from their upcoming EP Seasons Vol. 1, Summer. Produced by 1-O.A.K. and Drew Banga, the mid-tempo track features the group admitting that they probably won't be fragile with the hearts of their significant others. "I can't even give you my love...oh you know I'd hurt you," they sing. "You're looking like you need someone to be there, and I'd only desert you." I definitely respect the honesty on the song!

Another spotlight for you all! As always, if you are or represent an upcoming artist, designer, producer, etc., that is interested in a feature on The Spotlight, please visit our Features/Submissions page for more information.

Today, we have designer and owner of Yatir Clothing, Joi Lanell! Joi always had a true love of fashion, with her own parents even putting on fashion shows themselves when she was younger. Joi herself began drawing clothes as a kid. "It's just kind of something that I was born into, and it's something that I enjoyed also," Joi said. Though she loved fashion, she began studying film in high school and her first year of college. However, the designer eventually realized that it wasn't something that she had a true passion for, and she made her way back to fashion.

Raised in California, Joi stated that the Golden State definitely had a major impact on her style and designs. California's style is very flashy, bold, and glam, and you see that in Joi's own designs. She was also inspired by Pierre Balmain, as well as Missy Elliott's past collaboration with Adidas, since Joi is heavily into streetwear, which you also see in her own work.

In April 2011, Joi began her clothing line, Yatir Clothing. The Hebrew word Yatir is a word meaning "the most successful point" or "the highest point of success," which is what Joi strives for. When she started the brand, Joi had actually just graduated from high school, and was having a hard time finding a job to help support herself. "I [thought], 'What can I do to bring in money, but it's something that I enjoy doing at the same time?'" she said. She started simply with t-shirts that she could afford to develop and put out, but it has since branched out to more shirts, skirts, dresses and other custom pieces!

Recently, Joi signed with stylist Ashley Chin's fashion public relations company, Vanguard House, to take Yatir Clothing to the next level. "I've been in contact with Ashley for quite a few years, around the time I started Yatir," she said. "We both kind of have the same goals and visions for life and business, so we kind of clicked." Joi thought the decision to work with Ashley and VH was the perfect opportunity to help build her own brand.

Joi is currently working on Yatir's fall collection, which will feature a lot of prints and colors. The designer is also developing a fitness line, since fitness is something she's definitely into. Around 16, the designer was diagnosed with polycystic ovarian syndrome, which slows metabolism and causes one to gain weight. Joi recently got into "I decided adding a fitness collection would be perfect for my line, because it's also something that I'm passionate about."

In terms of what separates her from other designers, Joi doesn't follow standard fashion rules. "If I like it, I'm going to put it out, because I'm sure that it's something that other people out there will like too," the designer said. "If you like it, if you feel good in it, you can go out and wear it."

Through Yatir Clothing, Joi would love to one day empower other young women to do things for themselves as well. She encourages upcoming entrepreneurs, whether in fashion or other industries, to not be afraid to start and try their ideas. "You're going to mess up, but you just use that as a learning tool to help yourself to progress and get further," Joi said. She also said that, regardless of any naysayers, that everyone should keep going towards their goals. "Just don't give up," the designer said. "It will be hard, but you just have to push forward and go through it. You'll be a better person because you went through all the challenges, so just don't give up."

You can check out more from Yatir Clothing on the line's official website. You can also follow the brand on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram
